INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI softball closed out the home slate of its regular season on the right note, beating Detroit Mercy 9-2 on Senior Day.
"They were really relaxed today," said head coach
Elisabeth Beirne. "They stuck within the game plan and played within themselves. It was great to see and great to get the win."
The Jags (14-30, 10-13) pounded out 12 hits, led by senior
Delilah Wright who finished her last game at home going a perfect 4-for-4 and scoring two runs. Wright's four hits were a career-high.
"It feels great. It was really exciting to end on a win," said Wright. "To be able to have the energy that we had and to play well together was awesome…I have been thankful for all the experiences I have had. I am so thankful for all of my coaches."
IUPUI jumped on Detroit Mercy early with
Megan Overton getting hit by a pitch, Wright singling and
Haley Ginger reaching on an error to load the bases in the bottom of the first.
Mandy Dallas then took the first pitch she saw deep over the right center field fence for a grand slam and put the Jags up 4-0.
After Detroit Mercy scored two runs on a double in the top of the second, Wright kick-started a two-out rally with a single up the middle. Ginger reached again on a fielding error and Dallas capitalized with her fifth RBI of the day, bringing home Wright on a single to left field.
Detroit Mercy's third error of the game loaded the game,
Adison Lorsung made the Jaguar lead 7-2 singling up the middle to score Ginger and Dallas.
The five run lead was plenty for Overton who was in control of the Titans. The sophomore only allowed four hits and four walks while striking out eight batters.
Outside of the second inning, Detroit Mercy only had three runners get to second base and never had a runner advance to third against the Jags ace.
IUPUI added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, again with two outs.
Sabrina Trevino led off the inning with a double off of the left field wall and
Delainey Turner walked with one out. After Overton popped up to the shortstop, Wright singled on a bunt to load the bases. Ginger struck with a single down the left field line that plated two runners and gave the Jags the final margin.
The Jags have finished Horizon League play and are currently in the sixth and final spot for the Horizon League Championship. While the rest of the league still has games the next week, if IUPUI can get a bid for the tournament the Jags know anything can happen.
"I think what is great about the tournament is that everyone starts with a 0-0 record," said Beirne. "I think if we stick with our gameplan and we fight every pitch we are a very good team."
