INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI was roughed up by Detroit Mercy, getting swept in a double header to begin its series against the Titans on Friday (April 27).
The Jags (13-30, 9-13 Horizon) fell victim to a five-run fifth inning in the first game of the double header, falling 5-2, and then were run-ruled in the game two, losing 15-4 in five innings.
Adison Lorsung had the best day at the plate for the Jaguars, finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI. All four RBI for Lorsung came in the second game, including a bases-clearing double.
GAME 1: DETROIT MERCY 5, IUPUI 2
Megan Overton had dominated Detroit Mercy's lineup for the first four innings, striking out 10 of the first 12 batters she faced, including seven-straight as the Jags built a 2-0 lead.
IUPUI scored both runs in the bottom of the second thanks to struggles on the defensive end for Detroit Mercy.
Kristin London began the inning reaching on an error by the third baseman. After Lorsung reached on a bunt,
Sabrina Trevino moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, London crossed the plate on a wild pitch and in the same at bat,
Delainey Turner reached on an infield single that scored Lorsung.
The Titans got the Overton in the fifth after the sophomore struggled with control. The first batter of the inning walked and back-to-back singles loaded the bases.
Another walk brought in the first run of the game for Detroit Mercy. The big hit came next on a double to left center that brought home two runs and gave the Titans a 3-2 lead. A single in the next at bat pushed the lead to 4-2 and a throwing error on a steal attempt brought home the final run of the inning.
IUPUI had a chance in the bottom of the sixth, mounting a two-out rally started by a single from Lorsung. Back-to-back walks to Trevino and
Ashley Ousley put the Jags in business but Turner grounded out to end the threat.
GAME 2: DETROIT MERCY 15, IUPUI 4 (5 INNINGS)
After a defensive battle in game one that saw just seven runs and eight total hits, game two saw the offenses open up early and finish the game with 19 total runs and 18 hits.
Detroit Mercy got to starter Kristin London in the first after two walks and a single scored the first run. Detroit would score three runs on three-straight singles to push the lead to 4-0 before the first out.
Lorsung stopped any more damage on the next at-bat, throwing out a runner at home with a perfect strike to Trevino at the plate.
IUPUI responded in the bottom of the frame as Overton was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and moved to second as
Delilah Wright singled on a bunt. After a fielder's choice and
Haley Ginger was caught stealing, it looked like the Jags would miss out on a chance to score but back-to-back walks to
Mandy Dallas and London loaded the bases. This set up Lorsung who doubled to the wall in right center to pull the Jags within one.
Detroit scored three runs in the third inning after a double and two singles, a bases loaded walk and wild pitch.
Lorsung put the Jags' fourth run of the game on the board in the bottom of the third after the first three runners of the inning reached and Lorsung grounded out to second base to score Wright.
Detroit Mercy took control of the game in the top of the fourth as London was met with a leadoff home run. After a double and a walk, the big blow came on a three run home run to left field that put the Titans up 11-4. Detroit Mercy would add two more runs in the inning and two more in the top of the fifth to reach the final margin.
IUPUI will end its conference schedule and home schedule tomorrow (April 28) against Detroit Mercy with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. Before the game, the Jaguars will honor seniors Delilah Wright and Ashley Ousley.
