INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI took the first two games of its series with Cleveland State in dramatic fashion, winning game one in extra innings and taking the second on a walk-off home run in the seventh.
The Jags (12-23, 8-8 Horizon) saw an unbelievable performance by starter
Megan Overton who threw complete games in both games, 16 innings in total, after taking on the start in game two due to an injury to
Dezirae Leonard.
Delainey Turner delivered in game one with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, bringing home
Ashley Ousley.
Haley Ginger hit her first home run of the season in game two in the bottom of the seventh the send the Jags home winners.
"It was very important, especially coming off of being swept, to see the team fight together," said head coach
Elisabeth Beirne.
GAME 1: IUPUI 3, CLEVELAND STATE 2 (9 INNINGS)
In a game dominated by pitching, IUPUI got the last hit, winning 3-2 in nine innings to take game one.
Megan Overton picked up the win for IUPUI throwing a complete game, striking out a career-high 12 batters and allowing just two runs on five hits over the nine innings.
"She has fought hard for us all year and continued to do it today," said Beirne. "To have to throw [16] innings in a row and come back tomorrow and she did it and stay tough throughout it."
The Jags struggled against Cleveland State starter Mackenzie Joecken. IUPUI managed nine hits but only got three runs and struck out 12 times.
Cleveland State struck first as Riley Ries hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth. IUPUI quickly responded in the bottom half of the sixth.
Maddie Keeley reached on a one-out single and stole second to get in to scoring position. After a pop-out by Haley Ginger,
Mandy Dallas delivered with a home run to dead center to put the Jags on top.
In their last at bats, the Vikings began the inning getting hit by a pitch. Two batters later a double down the left field line brought home the tying run.
Both teams went down quietly in the eighth and
Sabrina Trevino picked a Cleveland State runner off at first base to end the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ashley Ousley doubled with one out. After a strikeout, Delainey Turner delivered to right center to end the game.
GAME 2: IUPUI 6, CLEVELAND STATE 5
IUPUI overcame blowing a four-run lead to pick up the win in game two after Haley Ginger hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh. Ginger finished the game 2-for-4.
The Jaguars struck in the bottom of the first as Megan Overton, who went 3-for-4 in the game, singled to start the game. Overton stole two bases to get to third and with two outs, Mandy Dallas brought home Overton with a single to right field. Dallas went 2-for-3 on the afternoon.
In the bottom of the third,
Delilah Wright singled for one of her two hits in the game, and moved to second after Overton singled to left. Ginger loaded the bases, reaching on a bunt. With Dallas up, a wild pitch brought home Wright. Dallas then reached on an error and Overton scored to make it 3-0 IUPUI.
Overton, who had already thrown nine innings in the game before, was in control in game two, not giving up her first hit until the top of the sixth. That first hit also drove in Cleveland State's first run of the game.
Overton made up for giving up the run in the bottom of the sixth, crushing a two-run home run to left field that scored Turner, who had reached on an infield single earlier in the inning.
IUPUI looked to close out the game in the top of the seventh but after two singles and hit batter, Cleveland State brought the tying run to the plate. A strikeout put two outs on the board but Mackenzie Joecken hit a grand slam to tie the game.
After getting out of the inning, Ginger stepped to the plate and on the second pitch she saw, drove a ball to right center field to end the game.
"It was inside and I have been struggling with inside pitches recently," said Ginger. "When I saw the pitch inside, the ball got really big and I swung at it and it went over the fence!"
IUPUI and Cleveland State will look to finish up the series on Saturday (April 14) at 1 p.m.
