LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Big innings and errors doomed IUPUI as the Jags dropped both games on Sunday to end the Black & Red Classic in Louisville.
IUPUI (4-11) committed five errors on the day as the Jags fell to Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Illinois.
GAME 1: Miami (Ohio) 6, IUPUI 3
Miami's win over IUPUI happened with a six-run bottom of the second, aided by multiple IUPUI errors. With two outs and a runner on second, the RedHawks got their first run on a fielding error by
Haley Ginger. A throwing error by Ginger on the next batter kept the inning alive.
Miami then hit two two-run doubles that sandwiched a walk to push the lead to 5-0. A fielding error by leftfielder
Maddy Griffin brought home the sixth run of the game for Miami.
IUPUI was finally able to break through in the sixth as
Sabrina Trevino singled home
Kristin London and
Mandy Dallas. The Jags final run came in the seventh as Ginger scored on a bases loaded fielder's choice.
Dallas finished the day 2-for-4 for the Jags and pushed her hitting streak to six.
Starting pitcher
Dezirae Leonard fell to 1-7 on the season but only allowed five hits and every run against Leonard was unearned. Leonard also finished with three strikeouts.
GAME 2: Eastern Illinois 8, IUPUI 4
IUPUI jumped out to a 3-1 lead but let that lead go in an 8-4 loss to Eastern Illinois.
After EIU scored a run in the first, the Jags took advantage of errors by the Panthers to take the lead.
Delainey Turner singled to start the inning and a single by
Delilah Wright coupled by an error moved Turner to third. Turner tied the game on another error on a stolen base by Wright.
Maddie Keeley kept the inning going with a single and then stole second. Wright scored the second run of the inning on a groundout by Mandy Dallas.
Megan Overton drove in Keeley on a groundout to push the lead to 3-1.
The Jags lead would quickly disappear in the top of the fourth. The Panthers began the inning with back-to-back singles off of Overton (3-3) and a walk loaded the bases. A two-run single followed to tie the game.
After a strikeout and a walk, Eastern Illinois delivered the fatal blow with a two-RBI double to right center that gave the Panthers the lead and forced head coach
Elisabeth Beirne to go to the bullpen and bring in
Amanda Melzoni.
Melzoni would induce two groundouts to get out of the inning but the damage had been done.
EIU increased its lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth and added two runs in the sixth.
IUPUI scored with a two-out bases loaded walk by Melzoni to bring home Wright in the bottom of the seventh but a fly out by
Adison Lorsung ended the game.
Both Keeley and London finished the game with two hits and Dallas singled to push her hitting streak to seven games.
