YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – IUPUI earned the series win over Youngstown with a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon behind another outstanding start from
Megan Overton.
Overton (W, 5-7) allowed only three hits and walked just one batter while striking out seven in the complete game.
"We came out today with a lot of fight," said head coach
Elisabeth Beirne. "We played solid defense and had a lot of key hits."
IUPUI (6-16, 2-1 Horizon) took the lead in the second inning on a ground out by
Sabrina Trevino that brought home
Kristin London. London got in to scoring position with a one-out triple down the right field line.
Youngstown State (9-14, 1-2 Horizon) tied the game in the bottom of the third with a solo home run but the Jags would respond in their next at bats.
Mandy Dallas, who went 2-for-3 on the day, singled to start the top of the fourth. Dallas moved to second on a wild pitch and Trevino stepped to the plate and delivered again. A single to right field drove in Dallas and put the Jags back on top.
The only struggle Overton would face the rest of the game was in the bottom of the sixth when Youngstown State hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with two outs. Overton's next pitch forced a groundout to
Haley Ginger to end the inning.
IUPUI will play its home opener on Tuesday, March 27 with a double header against Indiana State. The Jags will continue Horizon League play at Wright State with a three-game set on March 29-30.
