YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - IUPUI (5-16, 1-1 Horizon) earned its first Horizon League victory with a fantastic outing from Megan Overton as the Jags split the first two games of their series with Youngstown State (9-13, 1-1 Horizon).
The win against the Penguins was the second win in a conference opener in the last five seasons for IUPUI. The Jags will have a chance to win its second conference opening series in the last five seasons on Sunday (March 25).
GAME 1: IUPUI 2, YOUNGSTOWN STATE 1
IUPUI fought off a Youngstown State rally and had just enough offense to earn a 2-1 win and break a seven-game losing streak.
Up by one to enter the final inning, IUPUI allowed Youngstown State to load the bases with no outs. Overton, who had already stranded 11 Penguins on base, buckled down to secure the win. Overton struck out Lexi Zappitelli who was 3-for-3 before the at bat, and then got Nikki Saibene to pop out to
Mandy Dallas at second. Needing just one more out, Overton fielded a dribbler and flipped to
Sabrina Trevino at home to end the game.
Overton (4-7) was stellar in the circle, throwing the complete game. The sophomore scattered eight hits and struck out a career-high 10 batters. The only run Overton allowed was a solo home run by Zappitelli in the sixth inning.
IUPUI got on the board in the third inning as Maddie Keeley worked her way around the bases. Keeley, who went 2-for-3, led off the inning with single up the middle. With Haley Ginger at bat, Keeley stole second and then moved to third on Ginger's groundout.
Delilah Wright brought home Keeley on a groundout to put the Jags up 1-0.
In the fourth inning, IUPUI struck again, this time with two outs.
Kristin London singled and then advanced to third on a single by Trevino. In the next at bat, London scored on a passed ball, doubling the advantage.
IUPUI finished the day with seven hits coming from six batters. Wright moved her hitting streak to six games with a single in the fifth inning.
GAME 2: YOUNGSTOWN STATE 8, IUPUI 0 (5 INNINGS)
After a solid first game, the second game did not go as well for
Elisabeth Beirne's Jags as IUPUI lost 8-0 in five innings.
Youngstown State started the scoring early with a home run in the top of the first by Zappitelli. The Penguins would score runs in each of the next two innings on doubles to left field to push the lead to 3-0 after three innings.
The Penguins chased Leonard from the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. Amanda Melzoni came in to the game and got out of the inning without any more trouble.
Youngstown made quick work of the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to end the game 8-0.
The Jags only picked up three hits in the second game, getting base knocks from
Delilah Wright, who has now hit successfully in seven-straight,
Mandy Dallas, and
Delainey Turner.
IUPUI and Youngstown State will meet with the series on the line, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
