INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's basketball snapped a four-game losing streak with an all-around performance against Northern Kentucky in a 70-48 win. The Jags won wire-to-wire going up 6-0 and never looking back.
The Jags (7-6, 1-1 Horizon), finished with five players in double figures and allowed the second-fewest points this season in the victory. IUPUI was led by 12 points apiece from
Katelyn O'Reilly and
Tamya Sims, while
Sydney Hall and
Macee Williams each finished with 11.
Holly Hoopingarner rounded out the five, adding 10. Hall finished the night 3-for-5 from beyond the three-point line and Williams has reached double figures in every game this season.
"I just think it is the tempo, we are trying to get out and run when we get stops," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "It was good to see the mindset being an aggressive one from the get go."
Parkinson's squad put together one of its best defensive performances of the season with the 48 points the lowest allowed since the season opener. IUPUI also held Northern Kentucky (2-10, 1-1 Horizon) to just 36 percent shooting, the lowest in the last eight games, and forced 15 turnovers. Nine of those 15 turnovers were steals, which tied for the most against a DI opponent this season. Conversely, the Jags nine turnovers were the second lowest IUPUI has committed this year.
"Tonight we had nine turnovers, not 18 or 19 or 20," said Parkinson. "When you don't turn the ball over you get extra opportunities and we can be pretty good. I thought we made a more conscious effort to take care of the ball tonight."
Neither offense seemed to be ready for the 2 p.m. start as IUPUI led 6-0 five minutes in to the game. NKU scored its first basket with 3:50 left in the quarter but Hall hit a three and a bucket by Sims gave the Jags an 11-2 lead.
Agatha Beier hit a three with 28 seconds left in the quarter to put IUPUI up 14-6 after one. The six points are the fewest the Jags have allowed in any quarter this season.
After NKU cut the lead to five in the second, Sims and O'Reilly combined for four points to push the lead to nine. The Norse got to within nine late in the second but two layups by Williams and one by O'Reilly gave the Jags a 6-0 run to end the half and a 34-23 lead at the break.
IUPUI stretched its lead to 14 early in the third quarter after a three by Hall and would hold a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. Hall's three with 37 seconds left in the quarter put the Jags up 17.
The Jags increased their lead to 21 early in the fourth quarter on a layup by Williams and hit their largest lead of the game at 27 after a three-point play by
Morgan Allen.
IUPUI has won all three games against Northern Kentucky since joining the Horizon League.
Horizon League play continues for the Jags with a two-game road trip to Ohio. IUPUI will take on Cleveland State on Thursday (Jan. 3) before heading to Youngstown State on Saturday (Jan. 5).
