JAGS CRUISE TO 25-POINT WIN OVER CLEVELAND STATE

IUPUI took control after a big first quarter on route to a second-straight Horizon League win by 20-plus points.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – IUPUI women's basketball won its second-straight game, cruising to a 75-50 win over Cleveland State on Thursday (Jan. 3). The victory was also the 150th career win for head coach Austin Parkinson.

Macee Williams led IUPUI (8-6, 2-1 Horizon) with 23 points on an impressive 11-for-14 shooting from the field and also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Williams was joined in double-figures by Tamya Sims, who scored 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting and Katelyn O'Reilly, who poured in 11, going a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range.

For the game, IUPUI shot 50 percent from the field, its highest mark since hitting 52 percent against Indiana State and second-highest of the year. The Jags also shot 41 percent from deep, hitting 9-of-22 shots, both the most since IUPUI hit 10 threes on 48 percent shooting against VCU over Thanksgiving break.

The Jags also dominated Cleveland State (5-9, 2-1 Horizon) on the glass and in the paint. Parkinson's squad doubled up the Vikings with 48 rebounds to just 24 for Cleveland State. The Jags finished with a 15-8 advantage on the offensive glass which led to a 16-3 advantage in second-chance points. Led by Williams and Sims, as well as seven points from Morgan Allen, IUPUI outscored Cleveland State 38-24 in the painted area.

"Our ladies came out focused tonight and executed very well," said Parkinson. "The ball never stopped moving and we crashed the offensive glass with a purpose. Our post core was incredibly efficient on both ends of the floor.

Williams hit the first basket of the game and after a basket by Cleveland State, hit another layup that gave IUPUI a lead they would never let go. O'Reilly's first three of the night pushed the Jags lead to 7-2 and Sydney Hall's first of three threes answered another Vikings bucket. From there it became the Williams and Sims show, as the two combined for the next ten points to increase the Jaguar lead to 22-9. O'Reilly capped a 9-0 run to end the quarter with another three and the Jags were up 25-9 after the first 10 quarters. The 25 points in the first quarter were the most in a quarter since the first game of the season for IUPUI.

A three-point play by Williams to begin the second quarter made the run 12-0 in total and put the Jags up by 19 just 10 and a half minutes in to the ballgame. Hall's second three of the game with 6:21 left in the second gave IUPUI its first 20-point lead at 33-13 and IUPUI would hold a 42-26 lead at the break.

IUPUI pushed the lead to 31 two times in the fourth quarter after layups by Williams and Sydney Roule hit a three with 1:03 left to make the score 70-40 before five-straight by the Vikings to end the game.
The Jags shut down Cleveland State's offense which came in to the game averaging over 70 points a contest. IUPUI held the Vikings to a season low in points and the third lowest shooting percentage of the season at 35 percent. In the first two Horizon League games for the Vikings, both wins, Cleveland State got to the free throw line 22 and 25 times but the Jags played a clean game allowing just six free throw attempts.

While leading scorer's Mariah Miller (13) and Jade Ely (14) scored in double figures, Cleveland State's other two double-figure scorers Mariah White and four-time Horizon League Freshman of the Week Savanna Crocket score just six and four points, respectively.
The win was also Austin Parkinson's 150th win of his nine year career at IUPUI. Parkinson is IUPUI's all-time winningest coach.

The Jags have won all three meetings with Cleveland State since joining the Horizon League and have won the last two meetings by an average of 31.5 points.

IUPUI will have tough test on Saturday (Jan. 5) as Horizon League play continues with a trip to Youngstown State.
