INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore
Sydney Roule hit a three with 1.2 seconds on the clock to give the Jags a 73-72 win over UT Martin as IUPUI won its third-straight game to start the season.
With the Jags (3-0) down two and six second left on the clock,
Katelyn O'Reilly took the inbounds pass and drove to the basket. When O'Reilly was stopped she kicked the ball out to Roule who lined up a three from the top of the key and drained her second long ball of the night to put the Jags on top.
"I knew Coach P[arkinson] put me in to shoot the ball," said Roule. "KO [
Katelyn O'Reilly] drove and I was open at the top and just shot it. Afterward I was stunned but I was ready to play 'D' to make sure we actually won the game."
"That was huge," said
Holly Hoopingarner. "I have never seen anything like it. [Roule] had been struggling from the field but she has so much confidence in herself and so do we."
UT Martin (2-1) had a chance to win the game but the inbound lob toward the basket was stolen by O'Reilly to secure IUPUI's third-straight win, which tied the school record for best start to a season after the Jags started 3-0 for the second-straight year.
Roule finished with eight points and hit only 2-of-8 threes but hit the biggest one when it counted. The Jags struggled behind the arc for most of the night going 6-for-23. Only Hoopingarner had a solid night from deep hitting 3-of-4.
Sophomore
Macee Williams again led IUPUI in scoring, matching her career-high with 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting and going 6-for-9 from the free throw line. Williams also led the Jaguars with nine rebounds as IUPUI out-rebounded the Skyhawks 46-35.
"Macee is a special player and she has been outstanding this year," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "I think it is a matter of us continuing to get her the ball in places where she can score."
Hoopingarner finished second the team with 15 points and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds. O'Reilly also reached double-figures, pouring in 13 on 5-for-8 shooting.
IUPUI struggled with UT Martin's pressuring defense for most of the night committing 22 turnovers and the Skyhawks finished with 11 steals to score 29 points off of the Jaguars turnovers. When the Jags managed to break the Skyhawks press quickly they turned it into close baskets scoring 32 points in the paint.
The pressure the Skyhawks used for the whole game did come with a benefit for the Jags as UT Martin was called for 27 fouls and put IUPUI on the free throw line 24 times where the Jags hit 19.
After a three-point shot by Maddie Waldrop put UT Martin up three after the third quarter, IUPUI trailed for the majority of the fourth, going down by seven points after another Waldrop three with 4:22 left in the game. A Williams' layup cut the lead to five, but a layup for the Skyhawks put the lead back to seven with 3:40 in the game.
From there IUPUI got a free throw from O'Reilly and two from
Sydney Hall to make it a four-point game. A fast break layup by
Allex Brown cut the deficit to two with 2:05 left on the clock but the Skyhawks responded with a jumper with 1:14 left on the clock to go up four.
O'Reilly missed a layup but cleaned up her own miss with to get the Jags back within two. After a missed jumper, Williams' ninth rebound gave the Jags the ball back to lead to the Roule game-winner.
"This was a huge win for us. Like Coach P said, this is a tournament caliber team and there style of play is very up tempo," said Hoopingarner. "They come at you the whole game with those traps and you have to control yourself. It was a huge win after we got down like we did and to come back."
"It was great to see this early in the season the resiliency," said Parkinson. "With three minutes to go we found a way to get stops, got a stop at the very end and were able to make a shot at the end."
The Jags were completely flustered early by the Skyhawks defense, falling behind by 10 points halfway through the first quarter. IUPUI would battle back behind
Macee Williams who went on an 8-0 run by herself to turn a 20-27 deficit to a 28-27 halftime lead.
IUPUI will have time off before traveling up to Madison, Wis., for a matchup with the Wisconsin Badgers on Monday (Nov. 19) at 8 p.m. ET.
