MADISON, Wis. – Macee Williams scored a career-high 31 points but IUPUI fell in an overtime thriller, 65-64 to Wisconsin on Monday night (Nov. 19), suffering its first defeat of the season.
IUPUI (3-1) was looking for its second win over a major conference opponent of the season and took a two-point lead with 37 seconds left in overtime on a three-pointer by
Sydney Roule. After Wisconsin (4-0) made one-of-two free throws, IUPUI took over but
Holly Hoopingarner was tied up with the possession arrow in favor of the Badgers.
With three seconds left, Marsha Howard, who led Wisconsin with 15 points, drove to basket and got the go-ahead layup. With no timeouts, IUPUI inbounded the ball and Hoopingarner got an open look at a three but it fell short to end the game.
Williams was even more dominant for the Jags than she has been all season, leading all scorers with 31 points. It was the most points scored by a Jaguar since
Danielle Lawrence scored 38 against Memphis on Nov. 29, 2017. Williams did her damage on 10-for-19 shooting including 2-for-3 from the three point line and earned 14 trips to the foul line, making nine. Williams has scored in double-figures in all four games this season.
Hoopingarner was second on the team with 10 points, reaching double-figures for the fourth time, but shot just 4-for-16, including 2-for-8 from deep. Roule added nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from downtown. In total, IUPUI took 29 threes, connecting on just 10.
The Jags struggled with Wisconsin's height and length all game, getting outrebounded 47-38, including 19-10 on the offensive glass. The Badgers also owned the painted area 40-16. Despite the difference, IUPUI had a chance at the end of regulation. The Jags were down five with 4:36 left in the game after an Imani Lewis layup but fought back.
A Williams layup was followed by a jumper by Hoopingarner to pull the Jags within one. After another Badger miss, Williams found
Sydney Hall open in the corner and Hall buried the three to put the Jags back in front. Wisconsin tied the game with a layup but
Katelyn O'Reilly drew a foul and headed to the line. O'Reilly split her free throws and on the other end, Lewis split her free throws keep the game tied.
With less than 30 seconds to go in regulation, Williams missed a jumper but pulled down the offensive rebounds. A jump ball was called and possession went to the Jags. Roule's bad pass turned the ball over the Badgers but Wisconsin struggled against IUPUI's defense to get a shot off, sending the game to overtime.
The Jags started the game off hot, jumping out to a 9-4 run after Hoopingarner, Roule and Williams all hit threes. Through the first quarter, IUPUI did not have made two-point shot, going 4-for-7 from three and 0-1 from two-point range. The Jags also went 5-for-8 from the free throw line and led 17-15 after the first 10 minutes.
The back-and-forth game featured 11 lead changes and eight ties and both teams had moments where the offense went ice cold. The Jags struggled in the third quarter after taking a seven point lead with 7:48 left in the frame. IUPUI shot just 3-for-15 from the field in the quarter as Wisconsin used an 8-0 run to turn a four-point deficit in to a four-point lead and took a three-point lead in to the last quarter.
IUPUI will be heading to San Antonio, Texas for the Thanksgiving holiday where they will play UT San Antonio on Friday (Nov. 23) and VCU on Sunday (Nov. 25).
