CHICAGO – IUPUI volleyball suffered its second-straight 3-0 loss, this time to UIC, on Saturday evening (Oct. 20).
The Jags (5-19, 2-8 Horizon) were led by
Maggie Gibson,
McKayla Wright and
Hannah Oehlberg with six kills each and
Rebecca Schlechte finished with 20 assists but IUPUI has now lost six-straight matches.
IUPUI finished the day hitting .143, but allowed UIC (15-8, 8-2 Horizon) to hit .252. The Jags were led by
Rachel Hickey with 11 digs and Gibson finished with 10 but the Jags finished with 10 less digs than the Flames (54-44).
Haley Hoffman and Gibson led the defense at the net with three blocks each.
The Jags had their best offensive set of the match in the first frame, hitting .233 and finishing with 13 kills to just three errors. After kills by Gibson and Boatman, IUPUI had jumped out to a 6-2 lead and maintained a lead at 11-8 after a Hoffman kill. UIC responded with five-straight points to take a two-point lead and had an answer every time the Jags tried to make a run, never letting IUPUI tie the set and taking a 25-21 set win.
While the first set was the best for the Jags on offense, the second was the worst. IUPUI hit just .067 and had seven errors to just nine kills. IUPUI tried to hang tough with UIC but the Flames scored two points for every point the Jags earned to push a lead to 18-12. IUPUI used a 4-0 run later in the set to pull within four after a kill by Hoffman but three-straight from UIC ended any comeback chance for IUPUI.
UIC scored the first five points of the third set and held a 10-4 lead after an error by IUPUI.
Abby Boatman's ace capped a 3-0 run for IUPUI but five-straight for UIC made the score 15-7 and the Flames remained in control taking the final frame 25-16.
IUPUI will stay on the road for their next two matches as the Jags will travel to Wright State on Friday (Oct. 26) and Northern Kentucky on Saturday (Oct. 27). The match against the Raiders will begin at 6 p.m. and the match against the Norse will be at 4 p.m.
