CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The IUPUI women's tennis team picked up six singles wins in the ITA Regionals in Chattanooga over the weekend. Senior
Mariella Pessina led the way for the Jags with two wins.
Pessina, the lone senior on the Jaguars squad, won her first match in the women's B Flight 6-0, 6-3 before beating the No. 8 seed Elizabeth Rozin from Northern Kentucky in three sets, 7-6(6), 6-7(3), 6-4. In her bid for a trip to the quarterfinals, Pessina lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 to Belmont's Peyton Lee.
In the main draw,
Christina Stankovic beat Belmont's Drew Hawkins in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-0 before losing to No. 17 Alisha Reayer from Memphis, 6-3, 6-2.
In the rest of the B Flight singles,
Samantha Hayward beat Louisville's Anna Collins (6-4, 6-4),
Krystal Grubb beat Amelia Campbell from UT-Martin in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4)), and
Gabrielle Ochalik won in three sets against Chattanooga's Annie Tarwater (6-2, 2-6, 6-2). All three Jags lost in their second round matches.
The team of Ochalik and
Sarah Lounsbury had the best outing in doubles play for IUPUI, winning three matches in the B Flight. The duo started with an injury withdraw win over Wright State, beat Louisville, 8-7(3) and Kentucky 8-1 before losing to a team from Lipscomb, 8-4.
Pessina and
Samantha Hayward also picked up a win in doubles play beating a team from Chattanooga 8-5.
IUPUI will head to the University of Tennessee for a tournament to end its fall season on October 26-28.
