NORMAL, Ill. – IUPUI women's tennis began its fall season competing at the Redbird Duals hosted by Illinois State. The Jaguars competed against Illinois State, Eastern Illinois and SIUE over the two day tournament.
Over the course of the three matches, IUPUI had five different players pick up a singles win and four different doubles pairings grabbed victories as the Jaguars had five new players making their first appearances for head coach
Marisa Arce.
The Jags began the weekend playing doubles against SIUE and
Mariella Pessina and
Christina Stankovic picked up a No. 1 doubles win 6-1. Stankovic picked up two more wins in doubles play teaming with
Krystal Grubb for a 6-4 win over Illinois State at No. 1 and a 6-3 win over Eastern Illinois with teammate
Meghan Bernard. The other IUPUI doubles win came from the team of
Gabrielle Ochalik and
Sarah Lounsbury winning 6-4 at No. 2 doubles against Illinois State.
IUPUI's best result in singles play came against SIUE when the Jags took three of the six singles matches against the Cougars. Grubb took the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 1-6, 10-3, Pessina won the No. 4 match after a retirement in the second set (6-3, 2-0) and Bernard took a straight-set win at the No. 6 singles 6-2, 7-6.
The Jags' other two singles wins came against Eastern Illinois with Stankovic coming back to win in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 at the No. 3 spot and Hayward winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
IUPUI will continue fall play at the ITA Rolex Regionals beginning Thursday, Oct. 11 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
