JAGS HOLD ON TO BEAT WRIGHT STATE, WIN FIFTH-STRAIGHT ROAD GAME

IUPUI got 24 points from Danielle Lawrence and withstood a late rally to stay atop the Horizon League standings.

DAYTON, Ohio – IUPUI withstood a late rally by Wright State to earn their fifth-straight road win, 64-61 on Sunday (Jan. 21) afternoon. The win keeps the Jags tied for first-place in the Horizon League with Green Bay.

IUPUI (15-4, 7-1 Horizon) took a 60-47 lead after a Macee Williams layup with 8:11 left to go in the game. Following the layup, Wright State (15-5, 6-2 Horizon) stormed back, holding the Jags scoreless over the next six and half minutes as the Raiders used a 12-0 run to pull within one.  Emily Vogelpohl led the charge, scoring 10 of her team-high 16 points during the run.

With the lead down to one, IUPUI got its biggest shot of the game from Sydney Hall as Hall buried a three with 1:36 left in the game to put the Jags up four. After a Chelsea Welch layup for Wright State cut the lead back to two, Hall came up with a big rebound on the Raiders next possession and Danielle Lawrence added a free throw to give the Jags the final margin.

"Really proud of our kids and the way they executed a majority of the game," said head coach #Austin Parkinson. "They just found a way to hand on late."

Lawrence hit double-figures for the fifth-straight game, scoring 24 points, doing most of her damage in the first half, when she finished with 16 points. Lawrence also led the Jags with three steals.

"Danielle [Lawrence] played like the big time player she is and Tamya [Sims] had her best game a Jaguar," said Parkinson.

Tamya Sims finished the game with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Williams had another sold night, scoring 13 on a very efficient 6-for-8 from the field, with five rebounds.

As a team, the Jags shot over 50 percent for the second-straight game and the fifth time overall this season, hitting 50.9 percent of their field goals.

The Jags defense was solid, holding the highest scoring team in the Horizon League to 14 points under its season average. This came in part because of the Jags ability to limit Wright State star Chelsea Welch. Welch came in to the game as the leading scorer in the Horizon, averaging over 21 points per game on 44% shooting but was held to just 13 points on 5-of-14 from the field.

"I thought collectively, our kids did a good job of playing angles on defense and not fouling Welch around the rim," said Parkinson.

IUPUI looked like they had taken control of the game near the end of the second quarter after a three from Jenna Gunn gave the Jags an eight point lead. To start the third, IUPUI got buckets from Lawrence, Sims, Hall and Williams to push the lead to 13 and even got the lead as high as 15 late in the third quarter.

The Jags will continue to play on the road as they end the first half of the conference season, seeing Milwaukee for the first time on Friday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m.
