MILWAUKEE, Wis – IUPUI pulled off its most dramatic win of the season as
Tamya Sims' layup as time expired gave the Jags a 70-68 win over Milwaukee.
IUPUI (16-4, 8-1 Horizon) looked like they might be headed for overtime for the second time this season after Milwaukee (15-6, 6-3 Horizon) tied the game with three free throws with four seconds left on the clock.
Head coach
Austin Parkinson drew up a play for Sims, a Milwaukee native, who caught the ball at the top of the key. Sims drove to the right and jack-knifed a layup that bounced on the rim multiple times before falling through the net.
"It was crazy, that was my first game winner ever," said Sims. "For Coach P[arkinson] and my teammates to have the trust in me to make a play at the end, that means the world. It was great to play in front of my family. My family's my biggest fans they always support me even if they can't get to games. It was great seeing them all."
"I think it gives you confidence," said Parkinson. "I joked with the team that that was the first time since I've been coaching here that one of those have gone our way. The play was to isolate T{amya} at the top of the key and give her some room to drive."
The win gave IUPUI a school-record seventh-straight road win and a Division I era record 11
th win away from the Jungle.
Sims finished the game with 15 points on 7-9 shooting and had four rebounds as all five starters finished the game in double-figures for the first time this season.
Macee Williams led the Jags with 22 points on 11-for-15 from the field and finished with five rebounds.
Jenna Gunn scored 13 points, hitting a career-high three threes.
Sydney Hall also hit three shots from behind the arc, scoring 10.
Danielle Lawrence scored 10 and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
The Jags had a six-point lead after a Williams layup with three minutes left but Milwaukee did not go away. After a layup, Jamie Reit hit the Panthers third three of the quarter and another layup gave Milwaukee its first lead since three minutes left in the second quarter.
The game finished with each team giving the other their best shots as IUPUI made seven of its last nine shots and Milwaukee hit six of its last eight. IUPUI finished the night shooting 49.1 percent from the field but allowed Milwaukee to shoot 54.5 percent. The Jags only went 8-for-16 from the free throw line but are now 9-0 on the season when making fewer free throws than their opponent.
IUPUI looked like the started to take control in the third quarter as the Jags went on a 7-0 run with layups from Sims and Williams, followed by a three from Gunn. Hall hit a three of her own a minute later to give IUPUI a 10-point advantage.
Milwaukee clawed back in to the game with a 7-0 run of their own to end the quarter and cut the IUPUI lead to 50-47 at the end of the frame.
The first quarter went back-and-forth until the Jags suffered a dry spell late in the quarter. With the game tied at 10, Milwaukee went on an 8-2 run as the Jags did not make a field goal for almost three minutes. Gunn broke the streak with a buzzer-beating three to make it 18-15.
The Jags will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 28, to kick off the second half of the regular season when they take on Green Bay in a battle of the top two teams in the Horizon.
