INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team will look to continue its torrid play on Wednesday night (Sept. 27) when the Jaguars host UIC in Horizon League play at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The Jags come in having won seven straight matches with six of the victories coming via shutout.
Since the start of September, the Jaguars have been on a tear, going 7-0 overall with four road wins. The lone goal allowed came in the Jaguars' 2-1 win at NAIA No. 22 Marian. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sophia Lipka has authored six shutouts during the winning streak and seven for the year, giving her a 0.71 goals against average and .873 save percentage for the season. She's been named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week three times already this season and was also named #NCAASoccer Player of the Week earlier this season.
Offensively, the Jaguars have been incredibly timely with five different players netting a game-winning goal during the seven-game winning streak. The most recent winner came off the toe of senior
Hayley Shelton at Detroit while classmate
Krissy Kirkhoff collected her team-high fourth assist of the year on the play. For the season, true freshman
Valentine Pursey leads the attack with four goals and 11 points while Kirkhoff ranks among the Horizon League leaders with 38 shot attempts. Kirkhoff, Shelton and freshman
Miranda Ricks have two goals apiece as IUPUI has outscored opponents 13-8 on the season. Eight of the team's 13 goals have come from freshmen this season.
The seven straight wins are the program's most since the 2009 season.
The defensive group in front of Lipka has been exceptional all season long, keyed by freshman
Natalie McNally and sophomore
Jenna Sterr, both of whom have started all 11 matches. Other key contributors to the defensive effort have been
Sarah Jacobs,
Leia Peterman and
Becca Spitalniak.
QUOTABLE: "We knew there were going to have a very direct style of play so we wanted to put the ball on the ground and move it. That's what led to the goal. We got Krissy isolated on the center defenders and she beat them to the endline and slotted it across the goal line. I was able to put the ball in the back of the net. This was a true team effort all around," Shelton said after the Jaguars' 1-0 win at Detroit over the weekend.
CHART CLIMBING: Kirkhoff has moved into a tie for second on IUPUI's all-time assists list with 15 while Shelton is fourth in program history with 14. Kalli Shepler-Tucker (2012-15) holds the all-time mark with 16 assists in her four-year career. Kirkhoff is now third on the program's all-time list in career points with 65 (25 goals, 15 assists) overall. Megan Hock (2008-11) has the program's all-time mark with 74 points (32 goals, 10 assists).
JAGS WEEK OF GIVING - OVERTIME: Sept. 15-23 marked the first-ever Jaguars Giving Week as the department pushed to add 200 donors in a span of 200 hours. The response was overwhelming and humbling as nearly 400 donations have already been received as part of the initiative, so in an effort to keep the momentum going, IUPUI Athletics is offering 50 hours of 'overtime' for additional giving. These tax deductible gifts help benefit the entire program or can be earmarked to benefit specific programs.

IUPUI UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN: One of IUPUI's greatest strengths is the university's commitment to community engagement and IUPUI Athletics takes that commitment to improving the community seriously. On Tuesday, IUPUI will show support of the
United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI).
SCOUTING UIC: UIC is 2-9 overall on the season and 0-2 to open Horizon League play. The Flames are 0-6 away from home this year with five of the road losses coming via shutout. Naomi Rushe leads UIC with three goals while Keri Birkenhead has a team-high two assists. UIC has home wins over Chicago State (4-0) and SIUE (1-0), both of which came to open the month of September. In goal, head coach Brian Rigby has utilized three different goalkeepers with Annie Dicanio faring best with a 1.25 goals against average and 15 saves in four starts. For the year, UIC has been outscored 21-9 overall.
INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 1-1 all-time against UIC, having lost in Chicago (2-0) in 2014 before winning 4-1 in Indianapolis in 2015. Kirkhoff scored a pair of goals in that match and senior
Beth Parks tallied in the 75th minute of her IUPUI debut. Shelton had an assist in that contest.
UP NEXT: IUPUI will host Green Bay in Horizon League play on Saturday night (Sept. 30) at 4:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. That game will precede the men's match with UIC as part of a Horizon League doubleheader with both matches being aired on ESPN3.
