DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) on the road to a tough Dayton squad on Tuesday evening (Sept. 12).
After letting a close one get away in set one, the Jaguars were unable capitalize on a 14-7 lead in the second set, losing all momentum, and allowing the Flyers (7-4) to close the set with an 18-8 spurt.
IUPUI (4-7) opened the set on a 4-0 run, and later scored five straight to go up 10-5, capitalizing on a pair of Flyer errors. Dayton scored two of three, but the Jags' responded with three straight to take the 14-7 advantage. And then the gates opened for Dayton's comeback. After closing the gap to 15-10, the Flyers scored four straight, including consecutive kills from Kendyll Brown. IUPUI briefly recovered to take a 21-18 lead, but Dayton fired back with seven of the last eight points to take the set.
Jessica Sloan had four of her game-high 14 kills in the second set victory for the Flyers.
Both teams battled back and forth in the first set, but the Jags were unable to string together a long run of points. After the Flyers took a 3-0 lead, IUPUI rattled off four straight points, but never scored more than two straight the rest of the way.

Abby Boatman, but immediately allowed a big Flyer run to follow. Dayton scored five consecutive points to pull away for good.
IUPUI fell behind 8-5 early in the third set, before scoring five of the next six points to take a 10-9 lead, but Dayton quickly recaptured the momentum even though the Jags' continued to battle.
The Flyers never led by more than three points until the final point of the set, but the Jags' were never able to score consecutive points after taking its' 10-9 lead.
Offensively, IUPUI struggled throughout the match, only landing .120 percent of their shots, compared to Dayton's .292 mark. Errors also played a large factor in the loss for the Jags as they piled up 21 miscues, compared to just 13 for the Flyers.
Senior
Kori Waelbroeck led the Jags with 11 kills and 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior setter
Maggie Gibson added 27 assists and eight digs and
McKayla Wright hit .444 (5-1-9) in limited action.
For the Flyers, Sloan added nine digs to her 14 kills and Jane Emmenecker contributed 42 assists and 12 digs.
IUPUI hits the court again at the Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Classics against Cal Poly on Friday (Sept. 15) at 6:00 p.m. and will follow by playing North Dakota at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 16).
