GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The IUPUI volleyball team knew it would have its hands full when it ran up against Cal Poly on the opening day of the Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Classic on Friday (Sept. 15). That proved to be the case as Cal Poly rolled past the Jaguars in straight sets, 25-20, 25-16, 25-18. IUPUI (4-8) had no real answer for the Cal Poly sister duo of Torrey and Adlee Van Winden.Â
The tandem combined on 28 of the Mustangs' 49 kills and helped the Cal Poly attack hit .318 for the match. IUPUIÂ hit just .152 overall and was paced by senior
Kori Waelbroeck's eight kills.
Haley Hoffman had five kills on just eight attempts in hitting .625 and junior setter
Maggie Gibson delivered 21 assists in the loss.Â
The first set was tied at 20 all after a #Maddie Dean# kill, but the Jags' continued struggles to close out opponents reared its ugly head again. Cal Poly closed with five straight points to take the initial set of the night. Set two saw the momentum begin and end squarely on Cal Poly's side as the Mustangs opened a quick 7-1 lead, which included two early service aces. The Jags got no closer than eight points as Cal Poly coasted to an early 2-0 advantage.Â
The third set saw IUPUIÂ build a quick 6-1 advantage, which included three straight aces from senior
Gabby Fisher. Cal Poly turned the tables to pull even at 7-7 and later took the lead for good at 12-10 after back-to-back IUPUIÂ attack errors.Â
Cal Poly rolled from there, hitting .654 in the final set, putting home 18 kills against just one error in 26 attempts.Â
Gibson finished with a team-high 11 digs while
Jessica Helms and
Rhiannon Schuenemann had six apiece.Â
The loss was the Jaguars' third-in-a-row and first neutral site loss of the season.Â
IUPUI will be back in action on Saturday when the Jaguars face North Dakota (14-2) at 2:00 p.m. in Green Bay, Wisc.
