CINCINNATI, Ohio - The IUPUI men's soccer team will continue its early season tour of Ohio on Friday night (Sept. 1) when the Jaguars face Cincinnati at 7:00 p.m. inside Gettler Stadium. Friday's match marks the Jaguars' third trip to Ohio already this season, following trips to Ohio State and Bowling Green.
IUPUI (0-1) opened the regular season with a 2-0 loss to Bowling Green after going 1-2 in three exhibition contests. The Jags yielded goals in the tenth and 42nd minutes as the hosts built a 2-0 halftime lead in front of a raucous crowd of 1,600+. The second half was much more evenly played as BGSU outshot the Jaguars 5-4 in second half and 10-5 for the game. Freshman
Seth Vang and sophomore
Yan Souza accounted for the team's five shot attempts while redshirt freshman
Michael Buck was saddled with the loss in goal. The Columbus-native yielded both scores in his first collegiate action.
"It's hard to prepare for those nerves," second-year Head Coach
Brian Barnett said afterwards. "You can talk about it and try to replicate it, but you truly can't prepare for those nerves and Bowling Green took advantage of it by scoring less than 10 minutes into the game. From there, they had the advantage and we were left trying to chase the game a bit."
IUPUI had eight newcomers among the 16 that saw action and
Harold Agyeman-Prempeh and
Sam Gavin were making their first appearances in two seasons after missing all of last fall due to injuries. Both played all 90 minutes in the field, as did true freshman and Ohio-native
Tommy Patacca. The 25-year old Agyeman-Prempeh's play was a welcome sight as he provides a veteran tactician in the defensive end. He and his teammates understand that Cincinnati provides a unique challenge on Friday.
"They're athletic and strong," Agyeman-Prempeh said. "It's nothing that we cannot handle, but it'll be a challenge."
Agyeman-Prempeh was one of three Jaguars to tally goals in the preseason, along with senior
Sean Siasia and junior
Jared O'Dell.
Scouting the Bearcats: Cincinnati is 1-1 to start the season, having beaten Gardner-Webb (3-1) before losing at Wright State (4-2). David Sanz leads the Cincinnati attack with two goals and an assist already this season and has seven of the team's 26 shot attempts through two games. Darryn Commissiong tallied UC's game-winner against Gardner-Webb in the season opener. In goal, Noah Lawrence has played all 180 minutes, posting a 2.50 goals against average with five saves and a .500 save percentage.
Inside the Series: IUPUI is 2-4-0 all-time against Cincinnati and 1-3 in four meetings in Cincinnati. Cincinnati has won the last two meetings in the series, including a 3-0 victory on Oct. 12, 2016 in Indianapolis. IUPUI's most recent win was a 3-2 double overtime outcome at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis in 2014. Cincinnati outshot the Jaguars in last year's meeting, 12-10, and 7-4 on goal.
