EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The IUPUI women's soccer team was unable to capitalize on some prime scoring opportunities and yielded three second half scores as the Jaguars fell at SIUE, 3-1, in a preseason match on Saturday (Aug. 12). Freshmen
Valentine Pursey and
Jillian Steinbrink teamed up for the Jaguars' lone score of the match in the 84th minute.
The Jags attack hit a post and a crossbar in the opening minutes and closed the match with an 11-7 shot advantage. However, several opportune scoring chances went by the boards, specifically in the first half. Head Coach
Chris Johnson was able to utilize 18 different players on Saturday, including six true freshmen.
"I was definitely not expecting to start because I'm a freshman, but I have been working really hard in preseason to get my chance to play," Steinbrink, an Illinois-native, said. "The pace of the game and the quality of everyone's first touch is so much better than the club level while I was in high school and that makes it hard to keep up. The upperclassmen are really supportive and encouraging, so they helped me feel more comfortable and calm on the field because at the end of the day, it's just another game we have to go out and play."
SIUE's Andrea Frerker opened the scoring in the 50th minute and Caroline Hoefert deposited the game-winner in the 62nd minute. Angel Ikeda made it 3-0 in the 75th minute by redirecting a header off a corner kick past
Sophia Lipka.
Lipka finished with four saves in goal for the Jags.
The Jaguars will open the regular season on Aug. 18 at Carroll Stadium when they host Eastern Illinois at 7:00 p.m..
