INDIANAPOLIS – Longtime IUPUI golf coach
John Andrews has resigned as head coach of the men's and women's programs, effective immediately. Andrews has been at the helm of the men's program since 1998 and has been the only coach in the history of the women's golf program, beginning in 2000.
Andrews guided the men's program to three league championships (2002, 2005, 2012) and four runner-up finishes. He was a three-time League Coach of the Year honoree and coached five individual league champions, four coming in a five-year span from 2011-15. On the men's side, he coached 22 all-league honorees with 12 earning first team honors. He also coached an Academic All-American (Justin Wenger, 2007) and two Summit League Scholar Athlete of the Year (Wenger & Jose Pablo Segurola, 2015).
The Andrews-led program burst on to the national scene in 2004-05, winning five tournaments and collecting two more runner-up finishes. That squad capped the season with a Mid-Continent Conference crown and defeated more than 71 percent of opponents that season.
His 2011-12 team was one of the best in the country, winning a school record seven tournaments that season to lead the nation. That squad defeated better than 80 percent of its opponents over the course of the year and collected 11 top-five finishes.
On the women's side, Andrews coached 16 all-league honorees, including two-time first team finisher Adrienne Mayhew (2004-05).
All total, his men's teams achieved 27 tournament titles while his women's teams collected 10 tournament wins.
A number of his former players have gone on to pursue professional playing opportunities following their graduation. Most notably, former Jaguar Michael Davan earned a spot in the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay and is currently playing professionally in Latin America. On the women's side, Kristi O'Brien played professionally on the Symetra Tour and was featured on the Golf Channel's Big Break Florida.
Academically, his men's program collected NCAA Public Recognition for APR success for the second straight year earlier this spring. The Jaguars have registered a multi-year APR score of 1,000 the past two years.
Colby Huffman and
Lauren Cramer will oversee the programs and a national search for a replacement will begin immediately.
