KENNESAW, Ga. - Freshman
Nathan Springer led the way for the IU Indianapolis men's golf team on day one of The Scrappy at Pinetree, playing even par 144 (73-71) over 36 holes. The Jaguars enter Tuesday's final round in seventh-place among the 11-team field at 586 (301-285). The Jags dug a hole with an opening round 301, but fired back with a 3-under 285 for the fourth-best team score of the round.
"Today, the driver and irons were feeling really nice," Springer said following his first career round of par or better.
Springer's morning round 1-over 73 saw an ugly stretch where he gave up six shots in a three-hole span, followed by playing his final eight holes to 4-under. Included in the hot streak were three straight birdies before making par on his final hole of the round.
Titus Boswell,
Keaton Parmley and
Tommy Klinker all shot 4-over 76 and
Brady Schier closed at 6-over 78. Parmley made four birdies in his round while Boswell chimed in with three.
Schier was brilliant in round two with a 4-under 68 with seven birdies and Springer made four birdies on way to 1-under 71. Boswell shot 1-over 73, which included an eagle on the long par-5 No. 11, and Parmley also shot 1-over 73 with 15 pars.
Schier and Springer's nine birdies are each tied for fifth overall as the Jaguars collected 32 on Monday.
Host Kennesaw State leads the field at 2-under 574 while UT Martin is second at 579. Georgia State's Cameron Jackson is atop the field at 6-under 138 and owns a four shot lead going into Tuesday's finale.
Play is slated to resume at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
