FARGO, N.D. - For an up-and-coming women's track program, every point is precious for Head Coach
Antonio McDaniel's Jaguars when they compete in The Summit League Outdoor Championships. The Jaguars received contributions from the young and old on Thursday night (May 11) to open this year's championships, hosted by North Dakota State.
With just two IUPUI athletes scheduled to compete on day one, both found their way amongst the scorers as freshman
Shelby Pake finished sixth and senior
Jennifer Emery placed seventh in the 10,000m race. Pake was just one second off matching her best effort in the 25-lap race while Emery closed her collegiate career with a 17-second personal record.
"We broke off into two packs early in the race," Pake said. "Jenn took control of our pack and really helped us score the way we did. We raced smart and were able to catch some girls in the last half, which led us both to score points. It was a good start to conference and I'm excited to see what the rest of our teammates do this weekend."
"I don't think things could have played out any better. It was a very tactical race from the start," Emery said. "Shelby and I worked together really well the first half of the race and used each other to stay consistent. It was my last 10K and I not only finished with a PR, but also with my first-ever time placing.
"My only goal going into the race was to leave it all on the track and I can confidently say I achieved all my goals. Shelby and I definitely kicked off conference well and I am so excited to watch the girls perform the next two days."
South Dakota's Amber Eichkorn won the race in a time of 35:57.60 as USD runners swept the race's top three spots.
The Jaguars will return to action on Friday (May 12), beginning at 1:00 p.m. Eastern at the Ellig Sports Complex. Full results and a recap will be posted to IUPUIJags.com immediately afterwards.
