FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Continuing action in what is a daunting tournament schedule, the IUPUI softball team (5-14) lost both contests Saturday (March 4), falling to Nebraska 1-6 in game one before dropping a tough 2-7 decision to Arkansas in game two.
A day littered with a number of bright spots and plenty of positive signs, the Jags offense combined for 14 hits across the pair of games, with plenty of hard-hit outs and tough breaks that went against IUPUI.
Maggie Good continued to swing a hot bat for the Jags, as the senior went 3-for-6 with a solo homerun.
Delilah Wright showed plenty of burst on the base paths and placed several balls effectively, going 3-for-8 out of the second spot in the lineup.
Maggie Armstrong and
Roni Patterson both went 2-for-6, while
Alyssa Matson was 2-for-8 at the top of the lineup with a double and a run scored.
Despite the Cornhuskers ability to generate baserunners in the first game, the Jags managed to slow Nebraska's ability to generate runs, holding the team to just one run in the first. They'd add single runs in the second and third innings before being blanked in the fourth. The bottom of the fifth inning got away from IUPUI, as three doubles and two singles generated three runs, as Nebraska built a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Good came through with the Jags only offensive production, knocking a deep solo homerun to left center field, as IUPUI got onto the scoreboard. Neither team could score the rest of the way, as the game ended 6-1.
In the second game, an RBI single by Armstrong plated Patterson after a one-out double, as the Jags responded to a first-inning run by Arkansas. After tying the game, the Razorbacks put up three runs in the bottom half, despite only getting one hit. Four walks complicated matters for the Jags, as IUPUI fell behind 1-4. Matson found a way to get aboard with a one-out single in the third inning, and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly from
Taylor Chitwood to make it 2-4.
Three more runs coming across the bottom halves of the fifth and sixth innings gave the Razorbacks a substantial lead, as they'd cruise to victory, 2-7.
With the pair of losses, IUPUI will return Sunday (March 5) to play one more game against Arkansas at 1:30 p.m. EST. The game will air for free on ESPN3.
