SOFTBALL DROPS WEEKEND FINALE WITH ARKANSAS

The Jags finish the Wooo Pig Classic with a 1-4 record.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A competitive bout hardly indicated by the final score, the IUPUI softball team (5-15) fell 1-8 in their weekend finale with Arkansas (17-1) Sunday afternoon (March 5), ending the Wooo Pig Classic with a 1-4 showing.

Delilah Wright swung the best bat for the Jags on the afternoon, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Maggie Good went 1-for-3 with an RBI double, while Delaney Thompson finished 1-for-2.

The Jags were able to get on the board first, as Wright singled with one out to start the offense.  A ground out moved the runner to second base, as Good came up and promptly unloaded a line drive into the right center field gap, scoring a run and landed the senior at second base with an RBI double.

The bottom of the second inning featured a near highlight-reel play and a strange turn of events that led to an Arkansas run.  With the leadoff batter in the box, a line drive to the left-side sent Taylor Chitwood diving to her right.  Nearly making the grab, the senior Jag saw the ball deflect off the end of her glove and venture into foul territory.  The deflection allowed the runner to move up to first on a double.  The next batter up ended up striking out, but a passed ball on a swinging third strike sent the catcher retreating to the back stop.  The runner at second moved up to third, then advanced home on the throw to first, completing the 2-3 putout.  The Jags would get the next two batters in order to end the frame.

An RBI triple in the bottom of the third that caromed off the top of the left center wall gave the Razorbacks another run, as they took a 1-2 lead.  They'd score the runner from third on a ball up the middle that deflected off the pitcher's glove, followed by another single up the middle that prompted a pitching switch.

A tough break in the fifth, Arkansas scored a run on another near highlight effort, as Thompson went back peddling into shallow center field and nearly came up with a diving catch on a bloop hit.  It instead scored a run for the Razorbacks, making it 1-4.

A questionable call in the bottom of the fifth, the Jags thought they escaped the inning on a ground ball to the infield.  It appeared as if the throw to first was in time, but a diving baserunner beat the throw, according to the first base umpire.  The play scored a run for the Hogs, as they'd continue the rally and plate two more in the inning.

IUPUI couldn't generate anymore offense the rest of the way, as they'd fall after knocking multiple hard-hit balls in the final inning.

With the loss, the Jags will return to action next weekend (March 10-11) for the Louisville Classic Tournament hosted by the University of Louisville.  The Jags will open the action Friday against the alma mater of head coach Heather Tarter, Northern Iowa, at 12:30 p.m. EST.
