JAGS FALL IN BOTH CONTESTS ON DAY TWO IN ROSEMONT

The Jags were highly competitive in their first game before faltering against EIU.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Looking to improve their fortunes from the previous day, the IUPUI women's softball team (0-4) remained winless on the brand new 2017 season, falling in a tight battle 2-4 against Miami (1-2) before getting run-ruled in five innings by Eastern Illinois (2-1) Saturday (Feb. 11).  The Jags will play one more game Sunday against Green Bay to close out the Total Control Sports Invitational at 2:00 p.m. EST.

Erica Tharp started game one and pitched 4.1 innings while giving up three runs on four hits with a walk.  Nickole Finch came on to pitch in relief, surrendering an unearned run in 1.2 innings of work.

Finch and Maggie Armstrong combined to pitch the Jags through game two, with both pitchers combining for five innings of work while surrendering eight earned runs.  The Jags did not strike out a batter in either game.

The first inning of game one got off to a bad start, as Alyssa Matson kicked things off with a double to instantly put a runner in scoring position for IUPUI.  The next two batters struck out looking, followed by a fly-out that ended the scoring opportunity.  In the bottom of the inning, a ground-rule double to the No. 3 hitter was followed by a homerun to left field in the cleanup spot, putting the Jags down 0-2 early.

The Jags were quick to respond however, as Maggie Good walked followed by Delilah Wright getting on base after a hit-by-pitch.  Mckenzie Loge cashed in on the chance, as a double to right field plated the pair of runners for IUPUI.

An unfortunate situation for the Jags, Miami had runners at the corners with only one away in the bottom of the third.  A fielder's choice plated a run, before the Jags ended the inning on a 5-3 double play.  The run proved to be costly, however, as the Jags went scoreless for the remainder of the game.  IUPUI managed to get a baserunner in three of the remaining four innings, but couldn't cash in on any of the opportunities.

In game two, Eastern Illinois benefitted from a two run first inning, followed by another three runs in the second.  After IUPUI managed to keep EIU scoreless in the third, they throttled the Jags for another four runs in the fourth.  A single run in the fifth led to an abbreviated outing, as the Jags fell 0-10.
