ROSEMONT, Ill. – Another tough game in which the final score hardly reflects the true tale of the tape, the IUPUI women's softball team (0-5) saw a 2-0 lead escape them as the team faltered late, losing 2-10 against Green Bay (1-5) Sunday (Feb. 12) in the Total Control Sports Invitational finale. The Phoenix picked up eight runs in the seventh inning, breaking open what was a 2-2 tie prior to the start of the final frame.
With the exception of the final inning,
Erica Tharp pitched well in another start for the Jags, tossing six innings of work while giving up five earned runs on nine hits.
Nickole Finch pitched in relief, surrendering three earned runs in an inning of work on two hits with a walk.
Alyssa Matson completed a strong weekend for IUPUI, going 2-for-4 in the game with a double and an RBI. In total, she went 6-for-16 (.375) in Rosemont with two doubles, a stolen base and two runs scored.
Delilah Wright capitalized on her opportunity, going 3-for-3 in the game to up her weekend on-base percentage to .545.
The Jags struck first in the game, as Matson opened up the action with a single in the bottom of the inning. She advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, then took one more bag on another errant toss from the pitcher.
Taylor Chitwood plated Matson with a run-scoring double to left center, as the Jags jumped on top, 1-0.
In the next inning, Matson scored
Delaney Thompson, who reached on a fielder's choice, with a double to left center field. The knock was the second extra-base hit on the day for the Jags. It didn't take long for the Phoenix to answer back however, as Green Bay secured a pair of runs in the next half inning.
The teams remained deadlocked heading into the top of the seventh inning, when the wheels fell off the bus for IUPUI. Back-to-back singles started the frame before an error brought home a run and put runners at second and third. The next at-bat, a homerun to left field cleared the bases and pitted the Jags to a steep hole. Four more runs would score in the inning, as the gap became too large for the Jags to answer. IUPUI fell 2-10.
With the loss, the Jags will return to action next weekend in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as the team will take part in the Chattanooga Challenge set for Feb. 17-19. The first game is scheduled for Friday (Feb. 17) as IUPUI will face Radford at 11 a.m. EST.
