ATHENS, Ohio – IUPUI stormed past Ohio for its sixth win of the season behind a career-high 19 points from
Macee Williams and 23 from
Danielle Lawrence.
IUPUI (6-1) was in control from the opening tip, jumping out to a 10-0 lead with six points coming from Lawrence and buckets from
Sydney Hall and
Tamya Sims. Williams then dominated the rest of the quarter, scoring eight points and the Jags took a 26-9 lead after one.
"Really proud of our kids finishing out the road trip with a win against a very good Ohio team," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "We came out of the gates aggressive, which set the tone for the game."
The Jags still have not trailed in any of the six games that they have won and have only been tied for 1 minute and 47 seconds of the 240 minutes in those six contests.
Williams' career-high tops her previous mark of 18 points she finished with against UCF on Nov. 25. The Veedersburg, Ind., native finished 8-for-8 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free throw line. She also finished just shy of her second double-double of the season with nine rebounds.
"My teammates passed the ball very well and with them being aggressive on offense gave me open opportunities to score," said Williams. "It is a great feeling [to score a career-high]. I know my teammates were looking for me to score. They believe that once I have the ball I can score so I try to do everything in my power to do so."
After compiling a career-high 38 points in the win over Memphis, Lawrence led the Jags again, pouring in 23 points on 10-for-19 shooting and adding seven rebounds. Sims finished with her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Off the bench, Holly Hoopingarner also finished in double-figures with 10 points.
"Danielle [Lawrence] has been terrific the last two games finding the balance between being aggressive and patiently taking what the defense gives her," said Parkinson.
The Jags defense slowed down Ohio (4-2), holding the Bobcats to just 36 percent shooting and only allowing Taylor Agler to finish in double-figures with 11 points. The Bobcats had a +17.2 turnover margin coming in to the matchup but the two teams finished tied on the night with 17 turnovers apiece. IUPUI dominated Ohio on the glass, pulling down 44 rebounds to the Bobcats' 27.
Ohio pulled within seven to end the second quarter after holding the jags to just nine points in the frame and got as close as five to begin the third quarter but a layup by
Jenna Gunn, four-straight points from Sims and a three from Lawrence put the Jags lead back to double-digits. The Jags ended the quarter with a Hoopingarner made free throw and a three from Hall to go up 13 and would cruise to the victory, holding a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
"In the second half, we were able to string together several score-stop-scores that stretched things out," said Parkinson.
The Jags will return for their only home game in December on Wednesday (Dec. 6) against Miami (Ohio) before hitting the road for six-straight games.
