INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI fell in a heartbreaker to Miami (Ohio) in overtime on Wednesday (Dec. 6). The loss ended the Jags' three-game winning streak.
IUPUI (6-2) controlled the majority of the game but fell victim to an outstanding performance by Miami's (5-3) point guard Lauren Dickerson. Dickerson, an Indianapolis native and graduate of Lawrence North High School, scored a career-high 42 points including a four-point play with 1.5 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.
Dickerson was 13-for-26 from the field and 9-for-15 from behind the arc for the RedHawks who hit 15 threes to just five threes for IUPUI. Dickerson had 31 of her 42 points in the second half.
IUPUI was led by
Danielle Lawrence who scored 29, topping the 20-point mark for the third-straight game.
Tamya Sims pitched in a career-high 22 points on 9-for-13 shooting and #Macee Williams also finished in double-figures with 11 points. Lawrence notched her first double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
The Jags entered the fourth quarter up 62-48 and were up 11 with 3:35 left after a three-point play by Williams but Miami responded. Dickerson hit a three, then Kendall McCoy and Megan Galloway hit jumpers to cut the lead to four. A miss by Lawrence led to a layup from Dickerson to make it a one possession game.
Williams answered with a layup but Lawrence hit another three with hands in her face to cut the Jags lead to one. After the Jags made three of their next six free throws to put them up four, the game looked to be in order with only seven second left. Dickerson got Sims to bite and commit a foul with 1.5 second while hitting the three and made the free throw to send the game in to overtime.
In the extra frame, IUPUI scored first on a jumper by Sims but Dickerson answered with a three-point play. After Williams tied the score with a free throw, Leah Purvis hit a three for the RedHawks and Dickerson scored five-straight points and put the lead to six to put the Jags in a hole they would never get out of.
Williams was once against just shy of another double-double with nine rebounds and finished the night with two steals. The Jags shot 47 percent from the field and outscored Miami 40-28 in the paint.
After falling behind early, 6-0, IUPUI battled back. The Jags took the lead at 11-9 after a three-point shot from
Sydney Hall. Lawrence hit a three followed back-to-back layups by
Morgan Allen and Lawrence to put the Jags up 20-9.
Miami started the second quarter on a run to cut the Jags lead to four but again IUPUI kept the RedHawks at bay. A 7-0 run with a three from Lawrence and buckets by Sims and Williams put the Jags up 11 and another layup by Lawrence made the lead 13. After a steal by Hall,
Jenna Gunn finished with a layup to give the Jags their largest lead of the first at 41-26.
IUPUI maintained a double-digit lead until 6:04 left in the third quarter but quickly got the lead back above 10. After a jumper by Lawrence and two free-throws from Gunn, IUPUI took its largest lead of the game at 62-46.
