FAST BEGINNING PROPELS JAGS IN WIN OVER TENNESSEE TECH

IUPUI bounces back from loss with four players in double-figures against the Golden Eagles.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – IUPUI had four score in double-figures as the Jags overwhelmed Tennessee Tech in a 68-54 victory on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 10).

Jenna Gunn and Tamya Sims led the Jags (7-2) with 14 points each. It was a season-high for Gunn, who went 7-for-8 from the field and led the team with five assists. Danielle Lawrence had 13 but saw her three-game streak of 20+ points come to an end, and Sydney Hall finished with 11 points to score in double-figures for the first time in the last five games.

For the first time this season, IUPUI overcame a deficit to win a game. That deficit came as Tennessee Tech (2-7) scored the first basket of the game to take a 2-0 lead. With the score tied at four, IUPUI went on a 13-0 over the next 3:38 to take control of the game. Lawrence started the run with a three, Sims had a three-point play and the run continued with back-to-back layups by Gunn and Lawrence. A three-pointer from Holly Hoopingarner capped the run and gave IUPUI a 17-4 lead.

"I thought the girls came out with the right focus after a tough loss," said head coach Austin Parkinson. "Jenna Gunn had her best game of the year scoring but also added five assists and two charges, which was impressive."

While the Jags did allow the Golden Eagles to shoot 46 percent from the field, the defense forced 27 turnovers that lead to 31 IUPUI points. The bench for IUPUI outscored Tennessee Tech 12-0 with Hoopingarner leading the bench with five. Morgan Allen scored four and Allex Brown added three.

"Our bench today had really good energy and contributions. It's a nice way to head in to finals," said Parkinson.

Macee Williams chipped in four points and was one of four Jags to finish the game with four rebounds. Williams led the team with four steals, followed by Lawrence with three and Gunn with two.

The Jags jumped out to a 20-point lead early in the second quarter after a three by Hall and would push the lead to 21 with 1:40 left in the quarter after a free throw from Sims. IUPUI led 39-19 at the half after only allowing Tennessee Tech to score nine points in the second.

Tennessee Tech cut the lead to 14 in the third after a layup by MacKenzie Coleman, who led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, but IUPUI responded with an 8-1 run that featured four baskets in the paint for the Jags to push the lead by to 21.

A 7-0 run with a layup from Hall, jumper from Sims and three free throws by Lawrence gave IUPUI a game-high 25 point lead.

The Jags will be off this week for finals and return to the court on Monday, Dec. 18 at Georgia Southern.
