GREEN BAY, Wisc. – IUPUI was taken to the limit but emerged victorious over Green Bay with a five-set win that kept the Jags tied for first place in the Horizon League.
IUPUI (14-12, 10-3 Horizon) were led by
Kori Waelbroeck who finished the night with 20 kills. Two other Jags finished with double-figures as
Haley Hoffman posted a new career-high with 12 kills and freshman
Maddie Dean had 10 kills. It was the second time this season that Dean has had double-digit kills in a match.
With the game on the line, the Jags went to their hot hands as the three combined for 12 kills in the final set an only one error. Waelbroeck led the way in the final frame with six kills, Dean was right behind with four and Hoffman added a pair. The Jags were most efficient when the game was on the line hitting their best percentage of any set, .345, in the fifth frame.
"It was a great road win," said head coach Steve Payne. "The team really handled the pressure well in set five to get us the victory."
Following an opening set where Green Bay (11-13, 7-6 Horizon) hit .486 with 21 kills and only three errors, IUPUI's defense buckled down and lowered the Phoenix's hitting percentage to .205 for the match, including a .059 clip in the second set and a -.039 mark in the third.
As in every other conference match, IUPUI out-blocked their opponent, finishing with 11 blocks on the night to Green Bay's six. The Jags finished with multiple blocks in every set but the first.

Elizabeth Scott was the only other Jag with double-digit digs, finishing with 10.
After losing set one 25-17 and getting blitzed by Green Bay's offense, IUPUI looked to even things up in the second. With the score close early on, Green Bay went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-7 lead and force an IUPUI timeout. The Jags came back with a run of their own, grabbing a 13-11 lead on a kill by Hoffman. After the Phoenix tied the set at 17, the Jags took the lead after a Phoenix error and block from Boatman and Waelbroeck. The Jags took advantage of multiple errors and ended the set with a kill by Hoffman.
The third set saw IUPUI fall behind again with Green Bay jumping out to an 8-3 lead but IUPUI would claw its way back in to the set tying it up at 12 after a kill by Waelbroeck. The Jags would then take advantage of multiple Green Bay errors as the Phoenix finished with 12 errors in the set. IUPUI scored five straight-points on Green Bay errors following a kill by Dean to give the Jags set point. Boatman had a solo block to end the set and give the Jags a 2-1 lead.
Set four saw IUPUI sit its worst percentage of the night, .116, and Green Bay took advantage, hitting .311 and after tying the set at eight, used a 5-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish and win set four 25-17 to force the deciding set.
The final set saw the teams trade points until IUPUI took a two-point lead after a kill by Waelbroeck and then a kill and block by Hoffman. Dean's kill gave IUPUI a three-point lead at 13-10. Green Bay pulled within one but an error by the Phoenix gave the Jags the win.
The Jags finish up the Wisconsin road swing with a match tomorrow night against Milwaukee starting at 5 p.m.
