WELL-BALANCED ATTACK POWERS IUPUI PAST MILWAUKEE

IUPUI used one of its best all-around performances of the season to beat Milwaukee 3-1

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – IUPUI used one of its most complete performances of the season to beat Milwaukee 3-1 on Saturday (Nov. 4).

The Jags (15-12, 11-3 Horizon) had its second-best hitting percentage of the year, posting a .304 clip. IUPUI was led by Gabby Fisher who finished with 13 kills and a .480 hitting percentage, the highest of any Jaguar this season with at least 12 kills.

After posting 10 kills the previous night against Green Bay, freshman Maddie Dean tied her career-high with 11 kills. Kori Waelbroeck posted 10 kills for her seventh-straight game with at least 10 kills. Maggie Gibson guided the offense with 43 assists. The Jags also did not hurt themselves on the offensive end with only 13 errors, the second-fewest errors on the season.

"It was a very good balanced attack today, which really helped our offense produce today," said head coach Steve Payne. "Maddie [Dean] had one of her best matches today. Gabby [Fisher] with only one hitting error is her best performance of the season."

IUPUI also stifled Milwaukee (12-16, 5-9 Horizon) on the defensive end, finishing with 15 blocks, one behind the season-high of 16 set on Oct. 14 against UIC. Abby Boatman led the Jags with eight blocks, to go along with eight kills, and Waelbroeck finished with seven.

Haley Hoffman had a strong game on both sides of the net with nine kills and six blocks.

Elizabeth Scott led the back line with 14 digs and Jessica Helms had 13. Waelbroeck had another double-double finishing with 12 digs.

Once again the Jags fell got off to a sluggish start allowing Milwaukee to finish with a .364 hitting percentage in set one and the Panthers only had three errors on route to a 25-17 set one win.

IUPUI rebounded in set two using defense to take control of the set. During a 5-0 run, IUPUI got back-to-back blocks from Waelbroeck and Hoffman, then Hoffman and Dean, followed by two-straight kills from Hoffman. Dean finished up the run with a solo block of her own.

Later in the set, Boatman was the catalyst of another Jaguar run to take a four-point lead. Starting with a solo block, Boatman then sandwiched a block with Gabby Fisher with two kills. Waelbroeck and Boatman then combined for the Jags seventh block of the set to end a Milwaukee comeback and took set two 25-21.

After the break, the Jags and Panthers traded runs until IUPUI rattled off three-straight points to take an 18-14 lead with kills from Dean and Hoffman and an ace from Scott. The Jags closed out the set with a block from Boatman and Waelbroeck and a kill from Waelbroeck.

Set four belonged to Fisher who finished with four kills on six attempts and no errors. After taking a 9-8 lead, Fisher added a kill to give the Jags a lead they would not relinquish. Using nine Milwaukee attack errors, IUPUI increased its lead to 23-17. A Gibson kill gave the Jags match point and Fisher finished off the match with a kill to give the Jags the 25-19 set win.

IUPUI will be on the road for its next match on Wednesday, Nov. 8 with a match against Oakland. The game will be streamed on ESPN3 starting at 6 p.m.
