MEMPHIS, Tenn. –
Danielle Lawrence scored a career-high 38 points to lead the Jags to an 80-57 win over Memphis on Wednesday night (Nov. 29).
IUPUI (5-1) got off to another hot start with Lawrence hitting two free throws to begin the game after a pregame technical foul on Memphis and
Sydney Hall hitting a three. After a Memphis bucket, Lawrence hit a jumper and a three of her own to put the Jags up 10-2.
Lawrence was not done in the quarter either. She would score the next five points for the Jags on a three and a layup and put in another layup with 2:32 left in the frame to up IUPUI up 19-11. Lawrence ended the quarter on a 7-0 run with a free throw and two more threes to give her 21 points in the quarter. Lawrence ended up outscoring Memphis 21-17 in the first quarter and the Jags led 28-17 after one.
"I talked to my dad before the game and we talked about my grandma who is battling cancer," said Lawrence. "He told me that no matter what happens in the game, stay positive and keep fighting. And that is how my grandma is going about her cancer. She's always positive. That was my approach towards the game. I was just blessed to have a great night."
In total, Lawrence scored her 38 points, the eighth most in a game in school history, on 12-for-21 (57%) shooting, while making six of her 10 threes and going 8-for-9 from the line.
"Danielle [Lawrence] was incredible all game, scoring in a variety of ways," said head coach Austin Parkinson. "When she has her shot going she is really hard to stop."
It was not just Lawrence for the Jags, as
Macee Williams hit double-digits again with 11 points and a tie for the team-lead with six rebounds.
Holly Hoopingarner also finished in double-figures, scoring ten.
Agatha Beier finished tied with Williams with six boards and scored five points. Three Jags (Hall,
Morgan Allen and
Allex Brown) each had two steals to lead IUPUI who finished the game nine steals and forced 24 Memphis turnovers leading to 32 points.
"Tonight our kids came out extremely focused and locked in defensively," said Parkinson. "I also thought our bench was sharp throughout the game."
IUPUI took control of the game in the second quarter, using a 7-0 run to take an 18-point lead.
Sydney Roule hit a three to start the run and Hall put in a layup after two free throws from
Tamya Sims.
In the third quarter, IUPUI used another 7-0 run, with five-straight points from Williams and a layup from Lawrence to go up 55-31. Later in the quarter, the Jags went on an 11-0 run, holding Memphis scoreless for over four minutes. IUPUI had six players score during the run that ended with the Jags taking a game-high 35 points lead at 71-36.
Lawrence tied her career-high with a free throw to start the scoring for IUPUI in the fourth quarter and set a new career-high with her following foul shot. Her 38
th point came on a three with 5:53 left in the game, putting the Jags up 25.
IUPUI scored 80 or more points for the third time in six games this season. The Jags hit the 80-point mark just three times all of last season. The Jags have also not trailed all season in a game they have won.
The next game of the Jags will be on Saturday (Dec. 2) when IUPUI heads to Athens, Ohio for an afternoon showdown against the Ohio Bobcats.
