DETROIT - After a full week of training, the IUPUI men's soccer team will be back in action on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7) when the Jaguars face Detroit at 1:00 p.m.. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
IUPUI (0-9, 0-4 Horizon) has had a season filled with close calls, the most recent being a 4-2 home loss to UIC last weekend. The Jaguars got goals from
Uriel Macias and
Jared O'Dell, but yielded three second half scores to the Flames to remain winless in Horizon League play. The Jags fell behind early but pulled even on Macias' penalty kick in the 31st minute. UIC built a 3-1 advantage early in the second half before O'Dell scored off an
Alan Aguilar assist in the 61st minute. However, UIC countered with a goal 18 seconds later to seal the outcome.
The Jaguars' two goals were the most in a game this season and snapped a string of four straight shutouts. Redshirt freshman
Tyler Shanahan suffered the loss in goal and now owns a 2.80 goals against average and 36 saves in his five starts. Behind him,
Michael Buck has a 2.00 GAA and 11 saves, having started the first four matches of the year.
Offensively, Macias and
Pedro Valladao lead the Jags with three points apiece and Valladao has attempted a team-high 11 shots. Junior back
Sam Gavin has an assist from his defensive spot and is the only IUPUI player to not come off the field this season, having played all 810 minutes.
QUOTABLE: "The most important thing is to have a response - to show up the next day and work and perform and bring a collective energy to the group that says 'we're here to continue to fight and we're here to work through this,'" head coach
Brian Barnett said after his squad's loss to UIC.
SIDELINED: Freshman
Cameron Petersen will miss the game at Detroit after being issued a straight red card in the 55th minute of the UIC loss. Petersen, a New York-native, has appeared in all nine matches and made six starts this season, attempting one shot.
CATCHING FIRE: An
otherwise innocuous Tweet highlighting the men's soccer program went viral in late September as true freshman
Cameron Haegele earned celebrity status with an animated GIF. The Tweet, previewing the Jaguars' home match with Valpo, earned more than 100 retweets and 900 likes.
FORMER JAG EARNS MLS SPOT: After a long uphill climb, former IUPUI goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes recently inked a deal with the MLS FC Dallas as the team's third goalkeeper.
SCOUTING DETROIT: Detroit (5-4-2, 2-2 Horizon) is in the middle of the Horizon League pack, but comes in on a two-game skid with recent losses at Wright State and Xavier. The Titans' league wins have come over Belmont and UIC. The Titans boast a strong scoring duo in Tyler Moorman (7 goals, 2 assists) and Spiro Pliakos (7 goals, 1 assist) as the pair has accounted for 14 of the team's 19 goals. Jake Reitzloff has produced a team-high four assists on the year. In goal, Robbie Beckwell has a 1.40 GAA and 36 saves for a 5-3-1 record, which includes three shutouts. He's faced 112 shots for the year and yielded just 13 scores.
INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 2-5-3 all-time against Detroit in a series that dates back to 2002. Detroit defeated the Jaguars 2-0 on Oct. 19, 2016 last season in Indianapolis. Prior to that, IUPUI had gone five straight meetings without a loss in the series, earning three straight ties from 2013-15 on the heels of winning matchups in 2009 and 2012. Detroit won the first four meetings in the series from 2002-2005 by a combined 9-3 margin. The two schools have played overtime five times in 10 meetings.
UP NEXT: IUPUI will host Belmont on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. That match will be aired on ESPN3 as Andrew Kappes is on the call.
