FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Freshman
Katelyn Murphy registered her first collegiate race win to highlight the Jaguars' third meet of the indoor season on Saturday (Jan. 21) as the Jaguars competed at the Fort Wayne Duals inside the Gates Sports Center. Murphy benefited from teammate
Allie Wright setting the pace of the race before peeling off while Murphy rolled to the win.
"It was good to see Katelyn get a win in the mile today," Head Coach
Antonio McDaniel said. "Allie helped get the race going for the team, which resulted in a couple PR's.
"Overall we definitely have some areas we need to work on before we move on to some of the larger meets this season. The next two weeks of practice are going to be crucial for the team and I look forward to them."
Murphy and Wright set the tone for the day as Wright aided the rookie to a time of 5:06.34 and a three second win.
Haley Welch finished at 5:12.37 and
Amairany Cruz ran 5:17.02.
Megan Zajac clocked a time of 5:18.64 as IUPUI had eight entries spread over two races.
"It was overall a great day for the Jags," Murphy said. "It felt great to get back out there and crossing the line first was definitely a confidence booster. I couldn't have done it without all the help and support from my Lady Jags and my coaches."
Later, freshman
Rachel Saylor made her IUPUI debut in the 400, placing sixth in a time of 1:02.34. In the 800, sophomore
Maggie Shields was IUPUI's lone entry as she turned in a time of 2:34.41.
Like the mile, IUPUI had a heavy load of entries in the 3,000m race, paced by freshman
Shelby Pake. The rookie posted a time of 10:36.29 while junior
Kelsey Tyler ran a time of 10:57.47. Sophomore
Alexis Lewandowski finished at 10:59.20 and senior
Jennifer Emery finished at 11:09.99.
McDaniel's team ended the day with a pair of entries in the 4x400 relay as he looks ahead to The Summit League Championships. As expected, IUPUI's quartet of Cruz, Zajac, Wright and Saylor was the better of the two relays, posting a time of 4:03.19. Behind them was the group of
Valeria Guzman,
Sarah Childs, Welch and Murphy, which closed at 4:12.86.
IUPUI will run again next weekend when the Jaguars participate in the Tom Hathaway Distance Classic, hosted by UIndy.
