BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The opening match for the Hoosier Classic Volleyball Tournament did not go according to plan for the Jaguars, as the IUPUI volleyball team (4-9) fell in four sets (20-25, 15-25, 28-26, 17-25) to Cleveland State (8-2) Friday (Sep. 16). The Vikings landed four players in double-figures for kills, hitting .331 in the match.
The Jags were led by
Gabby Fisher who amassed 15 kills and eight digs in the match.
Abby Boatman had her best outing of the season, compiling 11 kills on a team-high .429 clip with two solo blocks and three block assists.
Alexis Mapes tossed 36 assists, while
Elizabeth Scott had one of her best outings of the year, tallying a team-high 14 digs with six kills and a pair of block assists.
After dropping the opening pair of sets, the Jags ignited on both sides of the ball in the third set, doubling up the Vikings on their way to putting up a stout 16-7 lead. Cleveland State mirrored the early success by the Jags in the set, piecing together their own 16-7 run to tie the match at 23-23 late. The teams would exchange jabs to push the score to 26-26, when back-to-back errors by the Vikings put the Jags in the set count, 28-26.
IUPUI would go on to lose the final set and the match, 25-17.
As a team, IUPUI hit just .185 for the match. The Jags amassed nine blocks, equaling the defensive output by Cleveland State. The Vikings put up 60 digs to 45 for the Jags, yet allowed five IUPUI aces while collecting just two. CSU was led by Grace Kauth, who put up a match-high 20 kills in the victory.
The Jags will next face Indiana at 12 p.m. EST on Saturday (Sep. 17) in the second day of the final tournament before the start of Summit League play for IUPUI. The nightcap against Arkansas State will have live audio available for free on IUPUIJags.com.
