BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Robert Murphy earned a runner-up finish at Friday's Indiana Intercollegiates, running the 8K race in a time of 25:36.04 on a rain soaked course. With Murphy at the top of the lineup, the Jaguars placed third of five Division I schools with 72 points.

Host Indiana earned the win with 26 points and fellow Big Ten foe Purdue was second with 44.

"This showed us just how special last year's win was," IUPUI Head Coach Chuck Koeppen said. "Robert did a heckuva job out there and just battled the whole way through.

"Another kid who really stepped up for us was Kyle Lewis. He really gave us a big time race when we needed it. As a team, we were a little bit off today, so it was nice to see a guy like Lewis give us a lift. The two teams that beat us today are really good teams, so there's no shame there. Indiana and Purdue have excellent programs and were better than us today."

The Jags, who edged both Indiana and Indiana State in Terre Haute last season, got a little spread out behind Murphy on Friday. Murphy finished second to Purdue's Jaret Carpenter by just less than two seconds for the individual tape.

Junior Abiel Mogos placed 13th overall in a time of 26:16.23 and fifth-year senior Dakota Dubbs was 14th at 26:18.29. Senior Damon Pruett was 21st at 26:48.06 and Lewis was 24th at 26:55.34.

Sophomore Jeremy Breedlove and Connor Sorrells were just off his pace, placing 28th and 29th, respectively.

"I think our guys now know that they'll remember last year's win at Intercollegiates for a lifetime," Koeppen said. "It's a hard meet to win when you're going up against the best of the best."

Murphy backed up his season-opening win at the Butler Opener with a second-place finish and is continuing to show he's a force to be reckoned with.

"He was tough as nails today," Koeppen said. "He just put his head down and had a really strong showing. It was fun to watch."

The Jaguars will be back in action on Sept. 30 when they compete in the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind..
