FARGO, N.D. - The unexpected run through the Summit League Softball Tournament came to an end for the sixth-seeded IUPUI Jaguars with a 10-1 loss to top seed North Dakota State in the championship game. The runner-up finish is the best finish in program history for
Amanda Rivera's Jags.
The Jags had a hard time getting out of innings as the last nine runs scored by the Bison were scored with two outs.
NDSU started off hot with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and then a two-out single to bring across the second run. The Bison added two more in the second on a single up the middle to make it 4-0.
Starter
Brooke Boetjer did her best to keep the Jags in the game keeping North Dakota State off the board in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
IUPUI finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth as
Maggie Good crushed a home run to center field to make the score 4-1 but the Jags only earned one other hit off of NDSU starter Jacquelyn Sertic.
The Bison scored six more runs, all with two outs in the top of the sixth and the Jags could not get the deficit under eight, ending the game after six innings.
Boetjer, Good,
Roni Patterson and
Taylor Chitwood were named to the All-Tournament Team. Boetjer tossed 21.2 innings over five games, collecting all five pitching decisions for Rivera's team. Good batted .421 (8-for-19) with five RBI for the tournament and Patterson batted .313 (5-for-16) with three homers and nine RBI. Chitwood batted .294 (5-for-17) with two homers and nine runs batted in over five games.
Over the course of the week, IUPUI staved off three elimination games to make the improbable run to the finals.
North Dakota State, which ended the regular season undefeated, collects the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament with the win.
