FARGO, N.D. - For the third straight year the IUPUI Jaguars won a first round game in the Summit League tournament. After surviving a Western Illinois comeback, the Jags moved on to round two with a 3-2 victory.
The Jags got the scoring underway in the third inning after
Ali Mosier led off the inning with a double. After a groundout by
Morgan Schlobohm moved Mosier to third,
Taylor Chitwood came through with a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Jags up 1-0.
In the fifth Chitwood delivered again. After another double by Mosier and a single by Schlobohm, Chitwood doubled to right field to bring home Mosier and put the Jags up 2-0.
"I made an adjustment after the first at-bat and it worked," said Chitwood. "It feels really good to get the pressure off our shoulders and get the win."
IUPUI tacked on one more run in the sixth after
Kaitlynn Moody started the inning with a double.
Ashley Ousley singled to put runners on the corners and
Delilah Wright went up the middle to bring home run number three.
That was all the offense the Jags would need for
Brooke Boetjer. Boetjer threw a complete game giving up six hits while striking out six batters.Â
"She came out and made a statement tonight that she is one of the best pitchers in the league," said head coach
Amanda Rivera. "She just got better and better as the game went on, hit her spots, and made batters miss."
After getting out of jams early in the game, Western Illinois finally got to Boetjer in the sixth. A lead off home run made the score 3-1. Later in the inning, a line drive off of
Maggie Good's glove at first, brought home a run and put the tying run a third with only one out.
That was when
Alyssa Neff made the play of the game. A fly ball to shallow right looked like it would bring home the tying run, but Neff threw a laser to home and
Roni Patterson applied the tag to end the inning.
"I just knew that I needed to be ready to throw home the second I caught the ball," said Neff. "To be honest, I didn't even know I got her out until Ali [Mosier] hugged me and told me."
The Leathernecks put runners on in the final frame but a grounder back to Boetjer ended the game and sent the Jags in to the second round.
IUPUI will take on Omaha in round two with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 PM ET.
