INDIANAPOLIS – In what was a ferocious demonstration of superiority for a reenergized program, the IUPUI softball team (13-26, 2-8) played some of their best ball of the season in a doubleheader sweep of IPFW (10-31, 1-10) Saturday (April 16) in nearly perfect weather conditions. The pair of W's marks their first Summit League victories this season.
Game One
In the first game, IUPUI was led by the dual-threat of
Kaitlynn Moody, who not only was effective in the circle, but also got it done at the dish. Moody pitched a complete game, going seven innings while only surrendering five hits, one earned run, no walks, and six strike outs. The complete game was her third of the season, as she improved to 4-7 and dropped her earned run average (ERA) to 3.48.
At the plate, moody came up with the game-winning hit in the fifth inning. Following a single by
Maggie Good and an excellent bunt single by
Ashley Ousley, both runners advanced into scoring position following an errant throw by the Mastodons' catcher that hit Ousley as she reached first base. Helping her own cause, Moody deposited a pitch into right center field that brought home both runs and broke up a 1-1 tie. She'd finish the game strong, notching the first IUPUI victory in Summit League play this season.
Game Two
In the second contest of the day, the Jaguars were stellar on both sides, as everything seemed to come together for IUPUI.
Brooke Boetjer took to the circle for the Jags, spinning a complete game shutout in five innings of work, surrendering only three hits and a walk while striking out one. She finished the game needing just 54 pitches to work through 19 batters, while the offense allowed her to leave the office early. She improved to 7-12 with her 11th complete game of the season, while dropping her ERA to 3.40.
The Jaguars scored runs in all four of their offensive innings, putting up two runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth.
Taylor Chitwood had the big bat for the Jags, as she went 3-3 on the day with two runs scored and five runs batted in (RBIs). Three of her runs came on a fourth inning three-run homerun to right-center field, plating
Ali Mosier and
Morgan Schlobohm in the process. Schlobohm finished the day 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored, while also swiping her 11th stolen base of the season.
The two teams will return to the diamond Sunday (April 17) at 11 a.m. for the third and final contest of the weekend series.
