Full Results (.html)INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's tennis team continued to stay hot, opening Summit League action with a 6-1 romp of Western Illinois inside West Indy Racquet Club on Saturday (Mar. 5). The win was the Jaguars' fourth in the past six matches with all four victories having come at home.
"It's great to start off league play with a win, but most importantly, a ton of confidence," first-year Head Coach
Marisa Lambropoulos said. "I know this will help the team moving forward, especially in conference play."
IUPUI (4-10, 1-0 Summit) breezed through doubles play, earning wins at the bottom two spots in the lineup to claim the initial point of the day.
Valeriia Lavrenchuk and
Rachel Swartwood coasted at No. 2 by a 6-2 score and
Mariella Pessina and
Brigitte Swartwood authored a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, IUPUI continued to dominate, winning the bottom five spots in the lineup for a convincing victory. The bottom four spots all won in straight sets while Rachel, the older of the Swartwood sisters, needed a 10-point breaker to capture victory at No. 2.
Sara Sherif took care of business at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4 and
Samantha Mayer cruised at No. 4, 6-2, 7-5. Pessina and Brigitte Swartwood also earned victories.
Western Illinois dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in Summit League play on the year.
IUPUI will cap the nine-game homestand next Saturday (Mar. 12) when the Jaguars host Southeast Missouri State at West Indy at 3:30 p.m.. Admission is FREE and open to the public.
