OXFORD, Ohio - Costly errors and a struggling offense spelled doom for the Jags in a 5-2 loss to Canisius Saturday afternoon (Mar. 5). The loss is the fourth straight for IUPUI.
IUPUI (5-10) got out to an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when
Roni Patterson drove a shot over the left field fence for her second home run of the season.
But Canisius (3-11) responded in the top of the fourth after two straight singles and an error but runners on second and third. A double down the line by Ali Block brought home both runners and gave the Golden Griffins the lead.
Kaitlynn Moody (1-4) started well for the Jags but was taken out of the game in the fifth after a lead off walk.
Maggie Armstrong entered the game for Moody and pitched very well in her first appearance of the year only giving up two earned runs on one hit in three innings pitched.
"I thought Armstrong did great today," said head coach
Amanda Rivera. "She pitched really well. She was a warrior out there."
The Golden Griffins extended the lead in the fifth on an error by
Morgan Schlobohm to make it 3-1.
The Jags got back in the game in the bottom of the sixth as Armstrong doubled down the left field line to start the inning.
Alyssa Neff pinch ran for Armstrong and scored on a
Taylor Chitwood double to the left center field wall. The Jags looked poised to tie the game but Chitwood was doubled off second base after heading for home with only one out on a pop up by
Maggie Good.
Another error increased the deficit for the Jags in the top of the seventh. With two outs, a line drive to left field went off the glove of
Ashley Ousley and allowed two runs to score giving Canisius the 5-2 lead.
