DAYTON, Ohio - IUPUI gave up two runs with two outs in the seventh inning in a 4-3 loss to Dayton Friday afternoon (Mar. 4). The Jags left nine runners on base and missed on two bases loaded opportunities in the game.
Katie Ryan had the winning hit for Dayton (7-5), a single to right center field, which brought home the winning run and completed the comeback for the Flyers. Down one run entering the seventh, Dayton started the inning with a single from Katelyn Gibson. Two straight outs moved the runner to third but put the Jags in position to win the game. A walk by
Brooke Boetjer to the next batter kept the inning going.
From there Lisa Tassi singled in to left field to bring home the tying run and put Ryan in position to sink the Jags with her hit.
IUPUI (5-9) got off to a fast start as
Ali Mosier led off the game with a double.
Morgan Schlobohm bunted Mosier to third and
Roni Patterson hit a triple to right field to get the Jags on the board.
Taylor Chitwood hit a sac fly in the next at bat to bring home Patterson and make it 2-0 in favor of IUPUI.
In the bottom of the third Dayton got even thanks to a two out double from Tassi, who finished the day 3-4 with three RBI.
The Jags had a chance to break the tie in the top of the fourth after loading the bases with no outs but
Alyssa Neff struck out and Mosier grounded out to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, after a Patterson walk and a single by Kaitlynn Moody, Kristin London reached on a throwing error by the second baseman. The error allowed Patterson to score and the Jags to take a 3-2 lead. After a walk by
Ashley Ousley loaded the bases,
Sarah Lawrence flied out to right field to end the threat for the Jags and set the stage for Dayton to make the comeback.
Boetjer (4-3) pitched well for the Jags despite the loss, only giving up four runs while striking out four batters.
Patterson finished 2-for-3 on the day and scored two runs for the Jags, who have now lost three straight games.
IUPUI is back in action tomorrow with two games on the schedule. The first is against Canisius with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
