JAGS SWEPT BY OMAHA IN SUMMIT LEAGUE OPENER

IUPUI falls to the Mavericks 4-2 and 8-7 in the first weekend of Summit League play

OMAHA - It was a rough start to the 2016 Summit League schedule for IUPUI as the Jags found themselves on the wrong side of two games against the Omaha Mavericks on Friday (Mar. 25). The Jags were swept in the doubleheader despite hitting four home runs in the two games.

Omaha 4 - IUPUI 2

Omaha (14-19, 2-0 Summit) got things started off quickly against Brooke Boetjer. The first batter Boetjer faced, Nicole Warren, took a full count pitch deep over the fence in left for a home run to get the Mavs on the board. Omaha increased its lead in the bottom of the third after Warren doubled down the left field line to make the score 2-0. The Mavs added a third run later in the inning on a Kourtney Pock single.

Boetjer (6-7) was chased from the game after three innings and the three runs, giving way to Kaitlynn Moody.

The Jags (10-18, 0-2 Summit) started to make a dent in the Omaha lead in the fourth inning as Ali Mosier hit her fourth home run of the season to right field. The solo shot from Mosier pulled the Jags to within two.

Moody faced the minimum over the next two innings and the Jags pulled within one when Taylor Chitwood crushed a 1-2 pitch to left field for the solo blast. Chitwood's fourth of the season looked to give the Jags some momentum and after Mosier doubled with two outs the Jags had the tying run in scoring position, but Maggie Good lined out to second to end the inning.

Omaha got a runner on first on a one out walk and the runner moved to second after an error by Morgan Schlobohm on a throw to Mosier. After another ground out moved the runner to third, a single through the left side increased the Mavericks lead to 4-2. A three-up, three-down inning for the Jags ended game one.

Omaha 8 - IUPUI 7

Game number two saw the Mavericks jump on top early again after a first inning run when a hard grounder went off of Taylor Chitwood's glove and in to left field. This time the Jags responded. Maggie Good hit a one-out double to the left field wall and Kaitlynn Moody scored her in the next at-bat with a single through the right side.

In the third inning the Jags jumped ahead after Morgan Schlobohm walked and Chitwood singled. Just like the game before, Ali Mosier got hold of a pitch, this time driving one over the fence to left to give the Jags a 3-1 lead. IUPUI continued the offense with three straight singles by Roni Patterson, Good and Moody to load the bases. With a chance the break the game open, two straight groundouts and a strikeout ended the threat for the Jags and left the bases loaded.

The Mavs used the momentum of getting out of the inning to take control in the bottom of the third against Jag starter Nickole Finch. Two straight singles and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs. Finch got a fly out to short center for the first out but back-to-back singles made the score 4-3 in favor of the Jags. The lead did not last long as Lia Mancuso doubled to left field to bring home two and give Omaha the lead.

The back-and-forth affair continued as Good drove in Schlobohm on a ground out with the bases loaded to tie the game.

Omaha regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a one out double down the right field line that chased Finch from the game and brought Moody on in relief for the second straight game. Two batters later, a double to center field brought home another run to give Omaha the 7-5 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Mosier had her second hit of the game with one out with a single to right. Two batters later, Good, who went 3-4 at the plate, absolutely crushed her third home run of the season to dead center field to tie the game up at seven.

The Jags let the first runner on in the inning but got two outs with a runner still on first base. A single to right field put moved the runner to third and put the go-ahead run 60 feet away. On a passed ball in the next at bat, Patterson's throw to Moody to try to get the runner coming home was off the mark and the Mavericks took an 8-7 lead.

The Jags went in order in the seventh handing Moody (2-6) the loss despite Moody only giving up three hits and the one costly unearned run.

IUPUI and Omaha are scheduled to finish their three game series tomorrow (Mar. 26) with first pitch scheduled for 12 PM ET.
