RALEIGH, N.C. - In the final game before the tournament portion of the NC State DoubleTree RDU Invite, IUPUI fell to NC State in an offensive showdown 11-8.
NC State got the scoring going in the bottom of the second. The Wolfpack loaded the bases with no outs but
Erica Tharp got the next two batters to pop up to the infield. In the next at-bat a ground ball to
Ali Mosier popped out of her glove and allowed a run to come across. Tharp walked the next batter to bring in a run and Molly Hutchinson singled up the middle to bring home two more runs and give NC State a 4-0 lead.
Â
The Jags bounced back in the top of the third in a big way. After a single by
Delilah Wright,
Taylor Chitwood hit a deep drive over the center field wall. The two-run home run was the third for Chitwood on the season and brought the Jags to within two. Two batters later,
Maggie Good joined in on the party hitting a solo shot of her own to center field and the Jags were within one. The very next batter, Mosier capped off the inning with another solo home run to center to tie the game.
Â
IUPUI kept the offense going in inning number four. With two outs and a runner on second,
Morgan Schlobohm kept the inning going with a single up the middle. Chitwood's liner landed on the left field foul line and brought home a run to give the Jags the lead. The rally continued with a triple by Patterson off the right field wall that scored Schlobohm and Chitwood.
Â
Mosier, who went 4-4 on the day and a triple shy of the cycle, singled up the middle to bring home Patterson and give the Jags an 8-4 lead.
Â
The four run lead quickly disappeared. In the bottom of the inning a walk and a double chased
Maggie Armstrong from the game after she replaced Tharp in the third inning.
Brooke Boetjer entered for Armstrong and gave up a home run to Hutchinson to bring NC State within one. Boetjer battled back and got out of the inning with the one run lead in tact.
Â
The Jags had a chance to get some insurance in the top of the sixth after loading the bases with two outs but
Kaitlynn Moody struck out to end the threat.
Â
NC State lead off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and a double to put the tying run at third. After a strikeout, a walk loaded the bases. Hannah Yeager took a 3-1 outside pitch to right field and put it off the scoreboard for the grand slam to give the Wolfpack the 11-8 lead.
Â
The Jags failed to do anything in the top of the seventh and the loss makes the Jags the three seed and away team for their rematch with NC State in the tournament.Â
