ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Jags were in a battle with Indiana State but fought to an extra inning win against the Sycamores.
Brooke Boetjer went all 11 innings for the Jags in the 6-5 victory over their in-state rivals.
The Jags (3-6) loaded the bases in the first inning after a single and two walks with two outs in the inning but
Kaitlynn Moody struck out to keep the Jags off the board.
In the bottom of the inning, Indiana State (1-1-1) took advantage of opportunities. After an error by Boetjer, a triple scored the first run for the Sycamores. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, the Jags surrendered a run for an out on a ground ball to first base, giving the Sycamores a 2-0 lead.
IUPUI responded in the next inning by scoring three runs of its own. The inning started with a walk and a single. After a fielder's choice, a walk to
Ali Mosier loaded the bases. After failing the previous inning the Jags struck this time. Schlobohm singled up the middle to score
Alyssa Neff and
Roni Patterson did the same to score
Delilah Wright and Mosier.
The Jags kept the offense going in the third inning. With one out, Moody doubled to right center and
Alyssa Neff singled to put runners on the corner. A wild pitch scored
Maddy Griffin, who pinch ran for Moody. After a sacrifice bunt,
Delilah Wright beat out an infield single to allow Neff to score and put the Jags up 5-2.
Boetjer was cruising along but things got tight in the late innings. Indiana State scored a run in the sixth and in the seventh a two out triple brought the Sycamores within one. Shaye Barton was next to bat for ISU and her chopper went over the head of
Taylor Chitwood and tied the game at five, sending the Jags to their first extra inning game of the season.
In the bottom of the eighth, Indiana State put runners on second and third but Schlobohm corralled a line drive to end the inning and keep the game going.
The tenth inning started with the International tiebreaker of putting a runner on second base. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, a fly ball to right field by
Maggie Armstrong looked like it might drive in the run but a strong throw gunned down
Kristin London at the plate to keep the Jags scoreless.
In ISU's frame the runner never left second base as Boetjer got three infield outs to move the game to the 11th.
In the eleventh inning, Wright moved the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt. Mosier stepped to the plate and her slow grounder to third was enough to score the run and give the Jags the one run lead.
Looking to keep the game going, the Sycamores used two outs to move their runner to third. The next batter hit a pop fly to right field foul territory, which was hauled in by Mosier to end the game and give the Jags the 6-5 win.
"We really shouldn't have been in this position tonight but I was really happy with the way we fought back and won this game," said head coach
Amanda Rivera.
The Jags will take the field again on Friday (Feb. 26) against Georgetown in Chapel Hill, N.C.
