Valpo ResultsINDIANAPOLIS - First-year Head Coach
Marisa Lambropoulos earned her first career dual match victory as her Jaguars defeated Bowling Green 4-3 to open a home doubleheader inside West Indy Racquet Club on Sunday (Feb. 14). The Jaguars claimed a sweep with a 5-2 win over Valparaiso in the nightcap.
After losing the doubles point, the Jaguars rallied to win the bottom four singles matches to escape victorious.
"I'm really proud of the way the team fought and the way they responded after losing the doubles point," Lambropoulos said. "We've dealt with some adversity the last few matches regarding injuries and illnesses, so our depth has been tested and today was key to our success.
"It feels good to get the first win under our belts and mine as a head coach and I know this group has untapped potential."
IUPUI (2-8) dropped two of three doubles matches with only
Mariella Pessina and
Bobbi Modesto winning by a 6-3 score at No. 3. However, singles play went much better as IUPUI won at the bottom four spots, all in straight sets.
Samantha Mayer and Pessina made quick work of their opponents at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, while Modesto was similarly successful at No. 6.
Sara Sherif won her match at No. 3, 7-5, 6-2, sealing the final outcome.
In the evening match, the Jags captured the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 slots. Pessina and Modesto stayed hot, sealing the doubles point with a 7-5 victory in the No. 3 spot to give the Jaguars the early lead.
In singles action, Modesto breezed past VU's Randi Wind, 6-3, 6-0 and
Valeriia Lavrenchuk was equally successful at the top of the lineup to put IUPUI ahead 3-0.
Marina Schneiger capped the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
With the outcome in hand, Mayer added a victory at No. 3 singles, topping Valpo's Cary Milanes 6-3, 7-5. IUPUI will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 19 when the Jaguars face in-state foe Evansville at 11:30 a.m. inside West Indy Racquet Club. Admission is FREE and open to the public.
