AMES, Iowa - The Jags earned their first win of the season thanks in part to a strong outing by starting pitcher
Brooke Boetjer. The senior's complete game led the way to a 3-1 victory over North Dakota Sunday morning (Feb. 14).
In the complete game outing, Boetjer only gave up two hits and one earned run while striking out five North Dakota batters.
"I felt today was a lot better than past performances," said Boetjer. "I felt like I finally showed up and it feels good now that we got that first win under us."
It looked as though IUPUI (1-4) was going to break the game open early on when
Ali Mosier led off the game with a triple to right center, but Mosier was thrown out while trying to score after North Dakota bobbled the ball in the infield.
The Jags broke through in the second inning off of a
Sarah Lawrence triple. Maggie Armstrong walked as the second batter of the inning and moved to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Lawrence drove a ball in to the right center field gap to the wall to score Armstrong and give the Jags the 1-0 lead. It was the first time the Jags had scored first all weekend.
North Dakota (0-3) threatened in the bottom of the fifth after a one-out double and walk put runners on first and second. In the next at bat,
Roni Patterson threw out Deja Miller who was trying to steal third for the second out. Later in the at bat, a hard line drive to the right side was snagged by Armstrong at first to end the North Dakota threat.
The Fighting Hawks got to Boetjer in the bottom of the fifth though. After a single and stolen base by Natalie Gerber, a passed ball moved the runner to third. A ground ball by Nicole Babrowski was fielded by
Morgan Schlobohm but her throw was just a hare late and Gerber go underneath the tag to tie the game at one. North Dakota moved Babrowski to scoring position but a fly ball to left by Shelby Hard was caught to end the inning.
After struggling earlier in the weekend coming through with clutch at bats, the Jags finally got some timely hits in the top of the sixth. With one out, Schlobohm singled to left. Patterson followed Schlobohm with a single to the second baseman. With runners in scoring position in the first four games of the weekend the Jags were 4-for-38 as team, but
Maggie Good came through. Good singled to center field and when North Dakota's shortstop bobbled the ball, Schlobohm took home to give IUPUI the 2-1 lead.
Not to be outdone by Good,
Taylor Chitwood doubled off the left field wall to bring home Patterson to increase the lead to 3-1.
The two run lead was all Boetjer would need as dominated the North Dakota lineup in the last two frames, forcing two straight three-up three-down innings securing the first win of the season for Jags.
"I feel like we just needed to get everything to click together," said Boetjer. "Now that we've got it I think we will keep on rolling."
IUPUI will be back in action next weekend when the Jags head to the Rosemont Dome in Rosemont, Ill., for four games.
