VERONA, Wisc. - IUPUI senior
Robert Murphy continued his highlight reel senior season, earning All-Region honors with a 17th-place finish at Friday's NCAA Great Lakes Regional, hosted by Wisconsin. Collectively, IUPUI earned an 11th-place team finish, despite missing some key runners to close the season.
Murphy continued to impress, running the lone 10,000m race of the season in a time of 30:47.3, clipping former standout
Tom Ohlman's school record by less than a second in the process. Fifth-year senior
Dakota Dubbs was also strong at 31:33.6, finishing 41st. Another senior,
Damon Pruett, was 81st at 32:19.5.
"I would say today was a fair effort," Head Coach
Chuck Koeppen said. "It wasn't anything to write home about, but it wasn't all bad either. We had some guys step up and run well and we had some other guys run not so well. That's kind of where we are at this point in the season.
"I was proud of Robert and Dubbs for really running well today. Pruett didn't have his best race, but I'm still proud of what he's done for us."
Murphy was near the front for much of the race, showing he belonged among the nation's elite as he became IUPUI's first-ever All-Region finisher. Dubbs, who returned for a fifth season, continued his rock solid consistency, just missing a top-40 finish.
"The plan was to go out with the top pack and hold on as long as possible," Dubbs said. "I felt pretty relaxed through 6K and ran the way I would've liked the last 4K. It was definitely a good finish as I was very pleased with the last race of the season. We would have liked to have placed better as a team, but without Abiel, we were hurting a bit."
The Jaguars had national aspirations prior to the season, but saw those fall by the wayside as injuries mounted, specifically to junior
Abiel Mogos. Mogos returned to earn first team All-Summit League honors two weeks ago, but had to shutdown his season due to injury following that meet.
In his absence, a pair of freshmen -
Brandon Arnold and
Jacob Stamm - continued to shine. Arnold, a redshirt, finished 92nd overall at 32:25.8 and Stamm, a true freshman, closed at 32:56.9 in 116th. Sophomore
Jeremy Breedlove was 187th at 34:59.9 and junior
Connor Sorrells was just behind him at 35:00.5.
"Hats off to Murphy and the entire team," Dubbs said. "I was very pleased with how the season turned out, despite a lot of ups and downs."
Host Wisconsin won the team title with 51 points and was trailed by primarily Big Ten foes in Michigan State (81), Indiana (81), Eastern Michigan (99) and Michigan (107).
Wisconsin's Malachy Schrobilgen and teammate Morgan McDonald crossed the line together in a time of 30:22.2. Michigan State's Sherod Hardt was third, just a second off their pace.
