TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Senior
Robert Murphy continued to build on his already impressive final collegiate cross country campaign as the Warsaw-native placed 19th of 268 runners at Saturday's ISU Pre-National Invitational at the LaVern Gibson Championship XC Course. Murphy ran a personal best 8K time of 24:23.6, just missing the school record in the process while helping IUPUI to a 26th place finish.
"I'm really proud of how we took on the best today and hung in there and fought," IUPUI Head Coach
Chuck Koeppen said. "Robert really showed what he's made of today. He was just tough as nails and ran up there with the big dogs.
Senior
Damon Pruett was also strong, finishing 88th at 25:13.3 to push the Jags ahead of foes from the Atlantic 10, Big Ten, Pac 12 and other major conferences.
"I thought Damon did a nice job too. He was tough today and really stepped up," Koeppen said. "We're going to need him a couple weeks from now at the Summit championship."
Oregon won the team title with 85 points, edging Arkansas by 25 points and Colorado by 39. Michigan (200) and Indiana (255) rounded out the meet's top five. Oregon's Edward Cheserek coasted to the individual title in a time of 23:34.7, clearing his closest competition by nearly 22 seconds.
For a program that's never qualified for nationals and never sent an individual beyond regionals, IUPUI proved on Saturday that this could be the year as they went toe-to-toe with the nation's best. Murphy charged hard late to earn a top-20 finish, while Pruett provided a fair supplement to the team's low man.
Fifth-year senior
Dakota Dubbs was just off Pruett's pace at 25:22.5, finishing 113th overall.
Brandon Arnold and freshman
Jacob Stamm rounded out the Jaguars' scoring five while
Jeremy Breedlove and
Connor Sorrells rounded out the group.
Arnold ran 26:14.9 and Stamm ended at 26:36.1.
"Dubbs ran great today too. He's always tough," Koeppen said. "We've got to close the gap a little from one through seven, but we've got some guys that are capable of stepping up and running up front. That's what it's going to take for us to go over there and win it. There's definitely work to be done."
Redshirt freshman
Kyle Lewis paced the Jaguars' open entries with a time of 27:27.6, finishing 41st of 73 runners.
Riding back-to-back Summit League titles, the Jaguars will seek a three-peat in two weeks when the league championship is held in Macomb, Ill..
